Our God is an Awesome God!  That is the title of a song which came to mind when I began preparing for this week’s service.  In our Gospel reading we see Jesus healing and reaching out to all, while in our New Testament reading we are warned against favouritism.  God does indeed open heesh arms to all!

Our scripture readings for the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity will be from Proverbs 22, James 2:1-17, and Mark 7:24-37, and we will be singing the hymns O Worship the King, To God be the Glory, When the Music Fades, Our God is an Awesome God, and Oh for a thousand Tongues to Sing!

Potluck – this week!

With the continued fall in Covid level in Chiang Mai, we are happy to have a potluck lunch this Sunday.  This will be outside under the trees at the New Vicarage. Bring food to share and drinks will be provided.  We are meeting outside to make everything as safe as possible.  If you need a lift there are spare seats leaving from the church after the service.

Enter the mooban and immediately turn left.  The New Vicarage is straight ahead.

Retreat in Chiang Dao

This Sunday, Gene will be preaching on the topic of the Action not Words. We have a hope in Christ, not just for ourselves but for the whole world, but this should prompt us into action!  In this time which sees such darkness in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Haiti, and so many other places, we have a hope for the world to share, and we must act when we can!

Our scripture readings for the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity will be from Song of Solomon 2:8-13, James 1:17-27, and Mark 7:1-23, and we will be singing the hymns Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun, Be Doers of the Word of God, Called as Partners in Christ’s Service, and Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah!

Our hope in the Lord!

Covid-19 in Chiang Mai

The recorded infection level in Chiang Mai has dropped as low as 16 for the last two days.  Pray that this trend continues and that things may soon be able to fully open up again. Also, please pray for the continuing vaccination programme in the city.  Most of the older people at All Saints have now been able to receive at least one vaccination, but there is still some way to go before all are vaccinated.

Pray for Afghanistan!

As people continue to flee to the airport in Kabul, please hold the whole nation in your prayers.  Remembering especially those known to us and those who were working as partners with MCC. The situation is dire now, and many people just want to get out!  Let us pray as we can and do what we can to help!

Baptisms – last Sunday

 My friend, Pastor Nut, who is only eighteen, performed two baptisms last Sunday in Samut Prakan.  He has a ministry to LGBT people and others. Please hold him, and the mother and son he baptised, in your prayers.

Masks are Biblical!



Some people have tried to object to mask-wearing on religious grounds!  For Christians we only have to read Leviticus 13:45-46 to know that if we are sick, or may be a risk to others, we should wear a mask!

Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of their face and cry out, “Unclean! Unclean!” As long as they have the disease they remain unclean.

Of course, we shouldn’t take verses out of context – but sometimes we can!!!!  🙂

The Wisdom of God!

Trip to Bangkok

I successfully picked my mum up from quarantine in Bangkok last Sunday.  Thank you for all your prayers. She is now with me in Chiang Mai and should be at church on Sunday.  Meanwhile, I have to self-isolate for two weeks, and so am working from home. I will be back at church on the 29th August.

Pray for Afghanistan!

We have many people at All Saints working with the Mennonite Central Committee aid agency.  MCC has been working in Afghanistan for many years.

Blaine writes:

We continue to monitor the situation very closely, and are keeping in contact with our expat staff and our Afghan staff.  We are somewhat relieved because our expat staff have been able to leave Afghanistan and now are in Uzbekistan. 
 
We are very concerned about our Afghan staff that have worked with us and remain in Afghanistan.  There is real anxiety among some of our partners which we are in contact with concerning their safety and future.  We have one partner that has done a lot of Peacebuilding training activities, and another three partners that have worked with Women’s literacy and vocational skills – All of these are in Kabul.  We have another partner in Herat that works with mental health.

Please hold all these people and situations in your prayers!

Pray for Myanmar

Karenni people fleeing their homes

We have sent another THB10,000 to help with the situation in Myanmar.  This is being used to purchase medical supplies for Karenni people.  It is estimated that 50% of the Karenni population have been internally displaced to camps along the Thai-Burmese border. There are reports of random shootings and the targeted shelling of churches by the Burmese military.

Please hold them, and all of Myanmar in your prayers.

Trip to Bangkok

My mum will finish her two week quarantine this Sunday.  As there are currently no domestic flights, on Saturday I will drive down to Bangkok to pick her up, and on Sunday we will return to Chiang Mai. Please pray for safe journeying and that there will be no problems. Thanks to Pat and Julia Ward for letting me stay in their Bangkok apartment on Saturday night!

I will then have to self-isolate and work from home for two weeks, so I will only be able to join on Zoom for the next Sunday.   (My mum will be free to go out though!)

In this week’s reading, Jesus proclaims himself the Bread of Life.  That’s OK, we are familiar with it and we like metaphors.  But Jesus took it further.  He said:

‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.  Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.

These are challenging words, and they were for his first listeners for the text says “Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him.”

This is part of where the church gets the idea of sacraments from.  It is more than just a memorial – it is God in action commanding us to “take, eat”! Metaphors are good, but sacraments are more powerful, for God is with us and Christ is risen!

Our scripture readings for the Tenth Sunday after Trinity will be from 2 Samuel 18:5-33, Ephesians 4:25-5:2, and John 6:35, 41-51, and we will be singing the hymns For All the Saints, I am the Bread of Life, Thou Who at Thy First Eucharist, and King of Kings Majesty!

Church Council Meeting

The Church Council met for three hours on Wednesday.

We discussed restarting the Gymkhana Club lunches, and other activities, and beginning the new prayer meeting. We then had a report from Mark and Hannah about the situation in Burma and voted to allocate another THB10,000 to relief there. We then had a good discussion about producing a new child protection policy and also about how we can further support the Youth Charity Foundation.

The meeting ended with a discussion about the idea of episcopal oversight and we agreed to invite Bishop Ron Langham to preach on All Saints Sunday, and then to give an explanation of the concept. We hope that the planned-for homegroups will start soon, but this depends on the Covid situation.

How do we come to God?

This week’s Old Testament reading tells of the cataclysmic outcome of David’s adultery with Bathsheba.  My sermon will continue where Mark Crawford left off last week, so if you missed it please watch the link below.

I will be asking the question of how we deal with the results of disastrous decisions, how do we come back from that terrible action, or those terrible words that should never have been said?   How does God use the Church to bring reconciliation, forgiveness, and a new start, while still holding us accountable for our actions? These are difficult questions, but ultimately we know that nothing can separate us from the love of God, and we are offered forgiveness and new life.

Our scripture readings for the Ninth Sunday after Trinity will be from 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13, Ephesians 4:1-16, and John 6:24-35, and we will be singing the hymns Immortal Invisible God only Wise, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, Here is Love, and Great is Thy Faithfulness!

Mark preaching last Sunday!

After much debate and soul-searching we have finally been able to find a compromise starting time!  From August 1st our morning worship will begin at 10:30 a.m. (Don’t worry if you forget – you’ll just be there early!)

Prayer Meeting

We would like to pray more.  Helga is a great woman of prayer and we have other pray-ers in All Saints.  We are thinking of starting a weekly prayer meeting – initially on Zoom.

If you are interested please contact me or Helga and let us know when would be a good time for you.  We are thinking of 9 a.m. one morning, but this isn’t fixed.

Upcoming Events!

We have had many exciting events planned, including a weekend in Chiang Dao, a potluck on August 1st, and the beginning of small house groups!  However, given the current situation, it seems wise not to have a potluck this week.

Because of the pandemic we can’t give a definite go-ahead yet for other events!  Watch this space for more news! The outbreak numbers in Chiang Mai seem to hovering around sixty cases, but we are watching the data carefully!!

Help needed at YCF

IN CHURCH AGAIN AT 10 AM

We will again gather for worship in the church and on Zoom this Sunday at 10 a.m.  We have much to be thankful for – even in the midst of this pandemic.

But we also have a call to service!  Mark, Chris, and I, went up to the Youth Charity Foundation on Wednesday for a meeting with the director, Khun Tasnee. We were expecting a general discussion about how All Saints and YCF could develop our work together in the future, but we found a more immediate need.

Leading Worship

The children’s schools are teaching online until at least the end of September and, until last week, YCF had two computers for over forty children.  They have been given four more, and four more are promised, but that is still not many machines for so many users.

In addition, there are only two staff members who can help the children with their lessons and who need to try to cover ten grades and numerous subjects!

They need our help!

Working in the rice fields last week!

There are three practical things that All Saints’ members and friends can do:

1)  If you have any old computers, laptops, or tablets, please consider donating or lending them to YCF.

2)  Can you teach English, or some other subject, or speak Thai?  Teachers are needed, but also just people who can help the younger children stay focused on their work and understand what they have to do.  We hope to find a way for people to travel to YCF each day to help.  If you can offer one day, or part of a day, that would be amazing.

3)  Financial support.  YCF had paid in advance for the children’s school lunches.  Now that there is no school, there are no lunches and the money has not been refunded.  They are now having to find money for three meals a day instead of two.  Any contributions would be gratefully received.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

IN CHURCH AGAIN AT 10 AM
(10:30 a.m. from 1st August)
Dear Friends,

We are back in pandemic mode – or on the edge of it!  Face to face worship will continue at All Saints this week, but we are advising particularly vulnerable people to stay at home and join us on Zoom.  We will again meet with fans running and the doors open!

The level of corona virus infection has again been rising in Chiang Mai, and we need to be cautious.

This week’s scripture passages focus on God as our shepherd, and Hannah Alexander-Herrick will be preaching on this topic this Sunday.

Perhaps you have reflected on verse 4 of the Twenty-third Psalm, and feel that we are constantly walking “through the valley of the shadow of death”!  But we can remember the second half of the verse, that God is with us, and God’s rod and staff are there to comfort us! These continue to be trying and unpredictable times, and we need to trust in God more than ever.

Last Sunday’s Potluck

IN CHURCH AGAIN AT 10 AM

Dear Friends,

In this week’s New Testament reading, Paul writes of our adoption as God’s children.  He talks of redemption, forgiveness, adoption, and inheritance.  It is a thing of blessing. Last Saturday night’s event at the Youth Charity Foundation reminded me how important it is to belong – to be part of a family!  That doesn’t need to be a blood family, but we all need to belong to someone and have someone we belong to!

We will explore more of this at All Saints this Sunday!

Last Saturday there was a special event at House of Grace to dedicate their new building.  The event began with a worship service at 5 p.m. which was followed by dinner. 

I was invited to give the opening prayer – though the rest of the service was in Thai!

Two of our choir members, Mint and Yoke, led the hymns.

We were welcomed by Khun Tasnee.

And all the children took part.

Last Sunday’s Potluck

Thanks to Arthur and Phyllis and all who helped with the excellent Potluck at the MCC Office Compound.  This will probably be the last potluck held there, as the office is expanding and they are losing storage space. Many thanks to Rebecca, Blaine, Arthur, and Phyllis, who have hosted potlucks and the Christmas Lunch during the pandemic.  Without you these would not have been possible!

Our next potluck will probably be at the new vicarage on 1st August!

Moving House

A big thank you to Mark, Gene, Arthur, Katie, and Karen, who came to help me move in to my new house.  And special thanks to Clarice’s son, Jonathan, who sent ten men and four vans to enable the move – we couldn’t have done it without them!

Wednesday Lunch

All being well, our weekly lunch at the Gymkhana Club will continue next Wednesday at midday under the trees.  You don’t have to be a member and all are welcome!

Dear Friends,

“I don’t believe it!”  Jesus arrived back in Nazareth in this week’s Gospel reading, and the people couldn’t believe or accept his teaching!  The text says Jesus was amazed at their unbelief. In the same way, the Pharisees and Sadducees also failed to accept his authority.  But what is spiritual authority?  Do we have it at All Saints and how can it connect to spiritual abuse?  Find out more this Sunday at All Saints.

Dedication at the Youth Charity Foundation

There will be a special event this Saturday night, 3rd July, at House of Grace to dedicate their new building.  The event begins with a worship service at 5 p.m. which will be followed by dinner.

Gifts for YCF in memory of Bill

THB 32,000 was collected last Thursday in memory of Bill Moeller.  Thanks to all who worked so hard to give Bill a fitting send off!  He will be sorely missed!  Bill’s partner, Mee, wishes to share his thanks for these kind gifts and for all the love he has been shown by so many from All Saints.  He will present the money to YCF at their special event at The House of Grace this Saturday.

Bill’s sister, Marilyn, also sent the following message:

I watched the You Tube of Bill’s funeral.  Thank you for your wishes. It made me feel like l was there with you. Please tell everyone at All Saints how much we appreciate all the wonderful tributes to Bill, his absence leaves a big hole in my heart.

I thought that Mee and all the Ministry Team did a splendid job to make the whole time a wonderful tribute to Bill and just as he had hoped that it would be.

Bill was a wonderful man, may he rest in peace and rise in glory!

Potluck and Choir – This Sunday!

Our wonderful choristers will again be singing in church this week and we will be have a special potluck following the service!  All are welcome!

Moving House

I am moving house this Thursday, 1st July.  If you’d like to offer help or even just moral support then let me know!  Pizza and drinks will be provided!  

My new house is in the Ing Doi mooban on the Canal Road between Huay Kaew and the International Convention Center. It should be a great venue for future potlucks, and other church events, too!  Still only 15 minutes from church!

If you want to come, be at the new house from 11 a.m. onwards.  Here is the address, map and link:
