Count the Cost!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Destroyed Russian tanks in Ukraine

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Gospel reading, Jesus says:

What king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace.

It seems to be something which Vladimir Putin failed to do when launching his invasion of Ukraine.  He thought it would be an easy victory – but it has proved to be nothing of the sort.

Jesus challenge his hearers, and challenges us, to count the cost of following him.  Is it worth it and a cost worth paying?

Our scripture readings this Sunday will be from Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Philemon 1-12, and Luke 14:25-33, and we will be singing the hymns Praise to the Lord, the Almighty; I have decided to follow Jesus; Jesus calls us! o’er the tumult; and To God be the Glory!

This is a very exciting project and we will need people to help manage lunches and other arrangements at the vicarage! Let me know if you can help in any way.

Best Seats?

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Choir and Potluck Lunch this Sunday!

Dear Friends,

This week’s Old Testament reading is probably our shortest ever.  It is posted below in full:

Proverbs 25:6-7

Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence
   or stand in the place of the great;
for it is better to be told, ‘Come up here’,
than to be put lower in the presence of a noble.

This is an easily understood passage and Jesus expands on it in our Gospel reading when dinner guests are jostling for the best seats!

We all want to be respected and well-regarded but some of us who are white, wealthy, and western don’t even notice the respect that we already receive just for where we were born. How can we retain our dignity and yet be humble?  Find out more this Sunday!

Our scripture readings this Sunday will be from Proverbs 25:6-7, Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16, and Luke 14:1, 7-14, and we will be singing the great hymns At the Name of Jesus; King of Kings, Majesty; Father We Love You; and Christ, Be Our Light!  We will also be singing a new setting of The Lord’s Prayer and the choir will be singing Above All!

Healing Call

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Jesus heals!

Dear Friends,

At first glance this week’s scripture readings don’t seem to match.  Our Old Testament reading tells of the call of Jerimiah, while in our Gospel reading Jesus heals a woman bent-double and is condemned for healing on the Sabbath. But on second glance they are linked, for is that not our calling, to bring healing to God’s world?  We often fail to be bringers of healing and reconciliation, but that is what God has called us to be!

Our scripture readings this Sunday will be from Jeremiah 1:4-10, Hebrews 12:18-29, and Luke 13:10-17, and we will be singing the great hymns All My Hope on God Is Founded; I, the Lord of Sea and Sky; Make Me a Channel of your Peace; and Go forth and tell!

Division!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

father against son and son against father

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we will read one of the strangest passages in the Gospels.  Jesus says: Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three…

This seems to be the opposite of the message of the Gospel and the one who came to bring peace on earth and good will to all!  How do we understand this and other disconcerting scriptures.

Our scripture readings this Sunday will be from Jeremiah 23:23-29, Hebrews 11:29-12:2, and Luke 12:49-56, and we will be singing the hymns When Morning Gilds the Skies; O Lord, the Clouds are Gathering; O God of Earth and Altar; and Sing We the King Who is Coming to Reign!

Are you Ready?

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Do you have power?

Dear Friends,

This week our Gospel reading is all about being ready.  It talks about having our lamps lit.  The parallel passage in Matthew gives more detail and castigates the foolish people for running out of oil and failing to have a spare supply.

When I was in Egypt in 2011 at the time of the Arab Spring, nobody knew how things would develop, many shops were closed and things were in short supply.  We learnt to keep our phones fully charged, just in case the power went off, and our cars full of petrol in case of the need to leave quickly.

Jesus urged his followers to be ready for “Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”  What does this mean to us, how do we understand it, and how can we be prepared?

Our scripture readings for this Sunday will be from Genesis 15:1-6, Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16, and Luke 12:32-40, and we will be singing the hymns All People that on Earth do Dwell; Men of Faith; Be Still for the Presence of the Lord; and Onward, Christian People!

New Church in Roi Et

Archbishop Ron Langham and Bishop Rick Saint

For various reasons I didn’t make it to Roi Et last Sunday to join the congregation for the consecration of the new Church of the Resurrection and the installation of Bishop Rick Saint as pastor.  However, Gene Bourquin and I were able to join the livestream of the service before our own service at All Saints.

It is wonderful that a new inclusive church has come to Thailand and we pray that this congregation will grow to provide a vital place of worship for expat and Thais alike.
