What is Sin?  More than Cream Cakes!

Dear Friends,

In this week’s New Testament reading, Paul talks a lot about sin!

He writes:

“What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?”

There’s a lot about sin in the passage, but what is it?  Few of us really think it is about the temptation of cream cakes, but a lot of the world think it’s chiefly about sex and that the church is obsessed with it!  We will delve in to sin in our service this week – and hopefully come up with some answers!

Our virtual service will again be this Sunday at 6 p.m. in Thailand, to worship together.  (7 a.m. in New York, midday in the U.K., and 1 p.m. in Europe and Egypt!)

Our scripture readings for this Sunday will be Jeremiah 28:5-9, Romans 6:12-23, and Matthew 10:40-42, and we will be singing the hymns At the Name of Jesus, Amazing Grace, All to Jesus I surrender, and All My Hope on God Is Founded!

Our service will consist of our usual Eucharistic worship!  All are welcome to join in the prayers and liturgy, to listen to the readings and sermon, and to receive virtual communion if they feel comfortable.  If you want to receive virtual communion then have a small piece of bread and a small glass of wine or grape juice prepared.

We will have a virtual congregational meeting following the service on Sunday 12th July.  This is to let everyone know what is happening at All Saints and give people the chance to ask questions.  It should not last too long!

Singing Together – Stand Up, Stand Up, for Jesus!

It is great to sing together, and over the last two months we have been singing to pre-recorded backing tracks.

I would like to use my version of “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”, but we don’t have a recording of this.  So… I want us to try forming a virtual choir!  You will need to download the sheet music or words, and the backing track, and then record yourself singing along.

To make this work, you will need to play the backing track though headphones (perhaps on your computer) and then record yourself singing on some other device (perhaps on your phone.)  This is to stop the sound of the backing track being heard on your recording.

Don’t worry if you don’t think you sound very good – it will be OK once all the voices are added together.  Once you are happy with your recording, email it to me at iain@AllSaintsChiangMai.com.

I know not everyone will be able to manage the technical side, but lets have a go!  Here are the files to download, you will need to use one audio file, and one words file.  You can choose which you prefer:

Dear Friends,

We are very familiar with the saying “gentle Jesus, meek and mild”, but is that what Jesus was really like?  In this week’s gospel reading from Matthew chapter ten, Jesus declares:

Do not think that I have come
to bring peace to the earth;
I have not come to bring peace,
but a sword.

Strange words for the Prince of Peace.  But perhaps realistic words.

Over the last few months the world had been largely united in the fight against Covid-19, but over the last couple of weeks, the cracks have begun to show.  This is perhaps to be expected, as after weeks of tension and lockdown people’s patience is tried, and people’s fuses are short.

But back to Jesus, he knew that his words would cause division he knew that he would “set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”   In Romans 12, Paul writes “If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”  And this is what we are called to do.  But we are also called to be passionate for Christ, and if we try to follow in his footsteps, division will sometimes arise!

We must ask God to give us the passion of Christ, and the unity of the Spirit.

Dear Friends,

The message of Jesus is good news, but good news for all?  In our Gospel reading this week, Jesus tells his disciples to go out and preach the good news, but says it is not good news for those who rejects his message.

Few could argue against the toppling of a statue of a slave-trader that we saw in Black Lives Matter demonstrations in the UK this week, but the toppling of the mighty is what Mary declares in Luke chapter one:

He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
 He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.

Jesus promises God’s kingdom is an upside down kingdom, it is a place with a servant king and justice for all!  As many around the world continue to march for justice, we, as Christians, must hold them in our prayers and support them with our lives too.  Our God is an awesome God, and each week we pray, Your Kingdom Come!

Dear Friends,

This Sunday is Trinity Sunday.  What does that mean, how can we understand the Trinity?

At its heart it sends the message that God is a community of love – God is not a solitary, lonely figure, but rather a gathering of unity – unity in diversity.  That sends a message for us that it is good for us to be in community, that we too are made to be in relationship with one another.

We will virtually meet again this Sunday at 6 p.m. in Thailand, to worship together.  (7 a.m. in New York, midday in the U.K., and 1 p.m. in Europe and Egypt!)

Our scripture readings for this Sunday will be Isaiah 40:27-31, 2 Corinthians 13:11-13, and Matthew 28:16-20, and we will be singing the hymns Holy, Holy, Holy, Let Your Living Water Flow, Break Thou the Bread of Life, and Tell Out My Soul!

Our service will consist of our usual Eucharistic worship!  All are welcome to join in the prayers and liturgy, to listen to the readings and sermon, and to receive virtual communion if they feel comfortable.  If you want to receive virtual communion then have a small piece of bread and a small glass of wine or grape juice prepared.

Thursday Discussion Group

We will meet tonight at 8 p.m. for our weekly discussion.  This week we will meet to pray for the situation in the U.S. and to discuss and pray together.  This is the week of Pentecost, and we will remember the coming of the Holy Spirit who brought both fire and a might breath.

We may not agree on everything and what the response should be, but we must strive to love one another, to listen to one another, and pray with one another.  The link to the Zoom meeting is here!

Although we are not meeting together face-to-face, the expenses of All Saints remain – indeed, they may increase as we seek to support those in need!
