Advent!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

All is prepared!

POTLUCK THIS SUNDAY!

Dear Friends,

Christmas is almost upon us: this Sunday, 27th November, is Advent Sunday, and we will be joined by our All Saints Choristers from the Youth Charity Foundation. We will decorate the church following morning worship and this will be followed by a potluck at the vicarage where we will also decorate the Christmas tree!

Advent is a time for anticipation, preparation, and as we prepare our homes and our church for Christmas, we must also again prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ-child! So let us prepare ourselves, and rejoice that love is in the world!

Advent Potluck!

Remember!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Trans people and church members last year!

Dear Friends,

Our annual Season of Remembrance concludes with the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Every year several hundred people are killed, often in the most brutal way, because of their gender expression.  Many are subject to extreme domestic violence and others are targeted by strangers. At a time when trans women themselves, are often portrayed as a threat to society in the western media, we need to stand in solidarity with this persecuted minority.

Of course, domestic violence is not limited to transwomen.  Many women of all sorts are subjected to the most terrible treatment, and we remember them too.

The bible readings for this Transgender Day of Remembrance will be Jeremiah 23:1-6, Galatians 3:23-29, and Matthew 5:1-11, and we will be singing the hymns Stand up stand up for Jesus; Lord, we make this cry for freedom; Beauty for Brokenness; and Let Us Build a House!

Lest we Forget!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Dear Friends,

This week we mark Remembrance Day on Friday 11th November, and Remembrance Sunday on Sunday 13th November.

Remembrance Day began as Armistice Day to mark the end of the First World War on the 11th November 1918 at 11 a.m. UK time.  (Midday Central European Time.)  Since then a minutes silence has been held each year on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.  At the end of the Second World War this became two minutes silence to commemorate the dead of the two world-wide conflicts. It has now become a time to remember all those killed in all subsequent wars and armed conflicts around the world, and to redouble our efforts to work for peace!

From the very beginning the two phrases associated with Remembrance Day are “Lest we forget” and “Never Again!”

This year I have been asked to officiate at the Remembrance Day observances at the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery.  The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by refreshments at the Gymkhana Club.  All are welcome! Our observation of Remembrance Sunday at All Saints, will follow on Sunday 13th November, again beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The bible readings for this Remembrance Sunday will be Isaiah 2:3-4, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, and Luke 21:5-19, and we will be singing the hymns O God our help in Ages Past, Abide with Me, Will Your Anchor Hold, and The Day Thou gavest Lord is Ended!

November!

Season of Mists!

Dear Friends,

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Decking with liquid pearl the bladed grass

I didn’t study much poetry at school, and remember even less.  One poem which has stuck in my mind, however, is John Keats’ poem To Autumn, although the literary minded amongst you may realise that the second line I “remembered” is not part of Keats’ poem.  Mr Google tells me it is part of Lysander’s opening speech in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream!

Whatever the case, November in the UK and northern hemisphere is a season of Autumn leaves, apple-bobbing, and the nights drawing in!

However, at All Saints, November is our Season of Remembrance!

It begins with All Saints Day when we remember and give thanks for Christians who have gone before us.  This is followed by Remembrance Day on 11th November, and Remembrance Sunday on 13th November. Then we mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance on Sunday 20th November.

It is good to remember, and give thanks, but this must spur us on to create change so that war and injustice can cease, and finally these remembrances become remembrances of the distant past!

The bible readings for this Sunday will be Job 19:23-27, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17, and Luke 20:27-38, and we will be singing the hymns Praise my Soul the King of Heaven; Lord Jesus Christ (Living Lord); I am the Bread of Life; and Tell Out My Soul!
