Advent is Here!
DECORATING THE CHURCH & POTLUCK THIS SUNDAY

Dear Friends,

Advent Sunday is here once again and the new church year commences!  In Advent we anticipate the coming of Jesus and the bringing of true peace on earth, it is a time of waiting, a time of expectancy, and a time to prepare our hearts for the Lord!

This Sunday we will be joined by our All Saints’ Choristers and will begin our Advent preparations by decorating the church for Christmas.  This will be followed by a potluck lunch at the vicarage.

Our bible readings this week will be from Jeremiah 33:14-16, 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13, and Luke 21:25-36, and we will be singing the hymns O Come O come Emmanuel, Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, and Joy to the World!

Transgender Day of Remembrance Weekend

The List of the slain

Last weekend we had two moving events to mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance.  On Saturday night we held a meal and candle-lit vigil, and on Sunday morning our service included the reading of the names of those killed in the last twelve months.

Sharing the message of God’s love for all

It was good to be joined by people from MPlus for our Saturday evening memorial.

Video of the service highlights will be available next week.

Swimming at the Centre of the Universe

image.png

This is the pool where we held the afternoon for the children of the Youth Charity Foundation at the end of October.  There are three swimming pools and a restaurant within a tranquil garden setting, where you can swim, sunbathe and relax.  The water in the 25 metres lap pool, and the two children’s pools, is sanitized using a salt water system imported from Australia.

Currently, the club celebrating its 14th Anniversary, but because of Covid-19 is not throwing a pool party, but instead is offering free VIP membership to new customers who register before 31 December.  Walk-in customers usually pay 100 – 200 Baht depending on the length of time they spend at the pool. With a VIP membership, however, there is a flat entrance fee of 100 Baht with no time restrictions.

As an additional incentive, first time visitors from All Saints Church are offered a free swim which can be booked using the following link:

https://koalendar.com/e/all-saints-church

If you wish to go as a group at the same time, one person should complete the booking form and add the email addresses of up to 5 more people when prompted to do so.

Detailed maps, directions, and even a video showing how to make your “Journey to the Centre of the Universe”, can be found on their website, ChiangMaiSwimmingPool.com

Transgender Day of Remembrance 2015

Dear Friends,

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

We held the first Transgender Day of Remembrance service at All Saints on 20th November 2016 and it has become an annual event. This year, for the first time we will have a special Saturday evening gathering in addition to our Sunday morning service.  This will be held at the New Vicarage in conjunction with the LGBT advocacy organisation, MPlus.

It will be good to have some Thai-language input and also to include positive stories of trans people in Thailand.  The event will begin at 5 p.m. with registration and snacks, and then things will begin more formally at 6 p.m. with a few short presentations by different people.

It would be very good to see a lot of support from All Saints people, so be there if you can!
Then on Sunday we will have a special service beginning at the usual time of 10:30 a.m.

Our  bible  readings this week will be from 2 kings 23:1-2, 7-8, 11-12, Galatians 3:23-29, and Matthew 5:1-11,  and we will be singing the hymns Stand up stand up for Jesus, Lord we make this cry for freedom, Beauty for Brokenness, and Let Us Build a House!

Let’s decorate the Church!

In two weeks’ time it will be Advent Sunday!  The service, at which the All Saints Choristers will also sing, will be followed by decorating the church for Christmas and a potluck at the vicarage!

Please sign up with what you can bring at the back of the church. This should be a great fun event for both children and adults!

Interreligious Tree Planting

Last Monday I was invited by the Department of Peacebuilding, Payap University to an interreligious tree planting ceremony.

Representatives of the Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Baha’i, and Sikh faiths were present, along with different Christian representatives.

It was good to represent All Saints and make new friendships!

This year’s wreath at the Foreign Cemetery

Dear Friends,

Today is 11th November.  On 11th November 1918 the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War.  Since then, the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, has been designated as a time to remember the victims of war.

This year the ceremony at the Foreign Cemetery is limited to fifty invited guests due to Covid restrictions.  I will not be there, but our Congregational Pastor, Rev. Mark Crawford, will be leading the observance, and All Saints member, David Cartwright, who served in the Royal Airforce, will place a wreath on behalf of the church.

But this Sunday, November 14th, is Remembrance Sunday, when we also remember those killed in two world wars and all the other victims of war.  We will have a special service at All Saints which will include the Last Post and two minutes’ silence at 11 a.m.

We must never forget the terrible destruction that war entails, for those who are killed, for those who are injured, and for those who are left behind.

Like the first people who observed Remembrance Day in the 1920s, we need to say, “never again!”

The following week we have our Transgender Day of Remembrance weekend.

On the evening of Saturday 20th November we will have an informal event, held in conjunction with MPlus, at the vicarage. This will begin at 5 p.m. and will include presentations by trans women and others.  This is the first time we have done this, so I hope many people from All Saints will be able to join us.

Then on Sunday 21st November we will have a special service beginning at the usual time of 10:30 a.m.

Finally, November ends of Sunday 28th with Advent Sunday.  We will decorate the church together and share in another potluck lunch!

Our  bible  readings this week will be from Isaiah 2:3-4,  1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, and Mark 13:1-8, and we will be singing the hymns O God our help in Ages Past,  Abide with Me, Will Your Anchor Hold, and The Day Thou gavest Lord is Ended!

Christ-Like?

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Who is like Christ?

Dear Friends,

We have reached November!  It will soon be Christmas – but November is a busy month too!

This week I will be looking at the story of Ruth and Boaz.  Boaz has been called a “type” of Christ for he redeems Ruth, but have we got the right one in the story?  Who is the Christ-like one?

The following week, November 14th, is Remembrance Sunday, when we remember those killed in two world wars and all the other victims of war.  The service will include the Last Post and two minutes’ silence at 11 a.m.

Our bible  readings this week will be Ruth 3:1-14; 4:13, Hebrews 9:24-28, and Mark 12:38-44, and we will be singing the hymns Christ Whose Glory Fills The Skies, Before the Throne of God Above, I will offer up my life, and Crown Him With Many Crowns!
