Food for the Soul!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Feeding of the Five Thousand?

POTLUCK THIS WEEK

Dear Friends,

It’s good to be back from my sabbatical and writing the weekly church email once again!

Last Tuesday we had around twelve people at Chili Night – not a record attendance, but more than we’ve had for a little while.  It was not quite the Feeding of the Five Thousand – but that is this week’s Gospel reading.

This Sunday we’ll have a potluck at the vicarage so bring food to share!   It will be great to have Christa back with us, too!

Attendance at All Saints has also been up during June and July with the usual summer dip failing to materialise!  How do we feed such a large and diverse people?  Physically it is easy, spiritually it’s more of challenge!

The readings for this Sunday will be from Isaiah 55:1-5, Romans 9:1-5, and Matthew 14:13-21, and we will be singing the hymns Awake, My Soul, and with the Sun;  For the Bread Which You Have Broken; Let us Break Bread Together; and A Mighty Fortress is our God!

Join us after church on Sunday, August 2nd, for a time of eating and being together.  Bring your favorite dish – homemade or from your favorite place.

Bon Voyager not Happy Holidays!

With my brother in June

My sabbatical is over so this may seem a strange time for me to go away, but I will still be working during my travels!

I am now officially part-time – which is good for me and good for All Saints.  (Our finances can no longer support one and a half fulltime clergy – in fact we have struggled for some time!)  How will this work?  Well, it doesn’t mean that I’ll change from six days every week to three days every week – at some busy times of the year I’ll be working more and at quieter times less.  I am about to go away for nearly two months – but I’ll still be doing some work like writing this weekly email and attending some online meetings!  Mark and Christa, and others, will of course be leading worship in my absence.

I leave Chiang Mai on 7th August and I will spend the rest of the month in France, helping Ratcha prepare for her move to Paris.  Then in September mum will join me back in the UK and we will visit a number of old friends around the country!

Ratcha in Paris

I shall be back at the end of September ready for the new church year!

All Saints Foundation

After much hard work and cajoling, all the paperwork is now ready for the closing of the All Saints Foundation. This should happen before the end of the month. Thanks to everyone involved, thanks to the board members who volunteered their time, and to all the other people who made it possible. Especially to Gai, who worked so hard as our Administrator for three years of the Foundation.

Pray for the Choir

Please pray for the All Saints Choir. We are trying to work out a number of logistical problems so that it can continue. We all want to link with the children and hear them singing. Pray that this will work out.

Room at the Vicarage

Large sunny bedroom

Big Ensuite Bathroom

Own sitting area!

Tired of living alone?

As you may know, Ratcha is going to Paris to study for two years, and that will leave only two of us living in the vicarage. It’s a big place, so we would like a third person to be able to share. We have a large room available with its own bathroom and a private living room area outside.  You’d also be able to use all the rest of the house as well and the garden.

If you’re interested, speak to Father Iain.

Last Chance Chili Night!

Next week is the last Chili Night until October!  Give chili a chance!  Come to the Vicarage on Tuesday at 6 PM to experience food and fellowship in a relaxed and casual environment.

You can still donate in person or online – and now you can use our QR code!.  Thank you for your support and love for All Saints and all we are trying to do together.  God has shown that God is mighty and we are in God’s hands!

Nothing Can Separate Us

From Pastor Mark, All Saints Chiang Mai

Jesus is with always – Always!

Dear Friends,

When God appears to Solomon in a dream and says “ask for whatever you want,” Solomon doesn’t ask for wealth or power or long life. He asks for wisdom. It is one of scripture’s most quietly radical moments. Paul, writing from a Roman prison, reaches toward something equally audacious: nothing in all creation — not death, not powers, not things present or things to come — can separate us from the love of God. And Jesus sketches the kingdom in the smallest of images: a mustard seed, a pinch of yeast, a pearl found by accident.

Big things hide in small places. Unshakeable love outlasts every threat. And wisdom turns out to be the greatest treasure of all. Join us this Sunday at 10:30 AM for what promises to be a rich and searching morning.

The readings for July 26 will be from 1 Kings 3:5-12, Romans 8:26-39, and Matthew 13:31-33; 44-52, and we will be singing the hymns God Whose Almighty Word, Holy Wisdom Lamp of Learning, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, and Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah.YouTube Live

All Saints Movie Fun!

We had a good time seeing the Odyssey together on Wednesday afternoon.  If you saw it together or separately some reflection questions to talk through together or think through individually:
1. When were you first exposed to the stories of the Odyssey?  What was your response then?
2. What surprised you about the movie?
3. What character did you find yourself relating to the most?
4 What was the most emotionally resonate theme of the film that impacted you?
5. What performance stood out to you?
6. What of the movie going experience stayed with you?

Ruth and Kids Update

Ruth and Henry, age 5 and Zoei, age 3 have been living in a temporary emergency shelter in Bangkok for the past 11 months.  Good news!  After many rejections, al local organization and lawyer will take on their case.  There will be many developments over the coming weeks and months and we will keep you posted how you can help this family.

Children of God?

From Pastor Mark, All Saints Chiang Mai

We Are Children of God!

Dear Friends,

Weeds and wheat growing side by side — it’s an uncomfortable image, and Jesus means it to be. The world is not yet sorted. Good and broken exist together in our communities, in our institutions, and if we’re honest, within ourselves. And yet Romans 8 lands like a thunderclap: we are children of God. Not one day. Now.

What does it mean to live as beloved people in an unsorted world? Join us this Sunday at 10:30 AM as we sit with that tension and find it strangely freeing.

The readings for July 19 will be from Isaiah 44:6-8, Romans 8:12-17, and Matthew 13:24-30, and we will be singing the hymns Immortal Invisible God Only Wise, All for Jesus, Lord Jesus Christ, and Tell Out My Soul.YouTube Live

Ruth and Kids Update

Ruth and Henry, age 5 and Zoei, age 3 were at All Saints last summer and have been living in a temporary emergency shelter in Bangkok for the past 11 months.  Over 35 NGOs and community organizations have been contacted and declined to help.  Can you help?  In the coming weeks we will be giving more details of how citizens of the UK, Ireland, Canada, and Australia can assist in Ruth’s attempts to find a new safe home to rebuild their lives.  Your prayers are most appreciated.

Great Harvest!

From Pastor Mark, All Saints Chiang Mai

Bountiful Harvest!

Dear Friends,

What happens when a seed falls on good soil? Isaiah tells us that God’s word never returns empty — it always accomplishes something, even when we can’t see it. The parable of the sower in Matthew doesn’t shy away from the hard truth that not every seed takes root, but it refuses to end there. Some soil is ready. Some ground receives. And when it does, the harvest is extraordinary.

Where in your own life is God’s word quietly taking root? Join us this Sunday at 10:30 AM as we dig into one of Jesus’ most beloved and challenging parables.

The readings for July 12 will be from Isaiah 55:10-13, Romans 8:1-11, and Matthew 13:1-9; 18-23, and we will be singing the hymns O Worship the King, Still, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, and Spirit of God Unseen as the Wind.YouTube Live

Rest For The Weary

Invited To Rest

Dear Friends,

This Sunday brings a word many of us need to hear: rest. Zechariah paints a picture of a king who comes not on a warhorse but on a humble donkey — strength wrapped in gentleness. Paul, in one of his most honest passages, names the exhausting tug-of-war between what he wants to do and what he actually does. And then Jesus speaks the words that have comforted weary souls for two thousand years: “Come to me, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest.”

If you’ve been carrying something heavy lately, this Sunday is for you. Join us at 10:30 AM as we explore what it means to lay our burdens down and receive a rest that isn’t about doing less, but about trusting more.

The readings for July 5 will be from Zechariah 9:9-12, Romans 7:15-25, and Matthew 11:16-19; 25-30, and we will be singing the hymns All People on Earth Do Dwell, Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart, Alleluia Give Thanks, and All My Hope on God Is Founded.
