Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Praise to God – the Christ has Come!

Dear Friends,

We have had a wonderful Christmas season at All Saints – fun, food, and fellowship, but most of all the knowledge that God is with us – Immanuel – the Christ has come! As we enter the New Year we know that this is the promise of Christmas, and that the promise is good for every day of every year!

2021 has been a strange year.  It was great for me to be able to return to Thailand in January and have my mum join me here in August, but it was sad for us all to lose Bill Moeller and Clarice Green during the year.  New people have joined us, others have left, but the good news remains that God is with us.

Mum and I will be celebrating New Year in Chiang Rai with some of the Youth Charity Foundation, but I will be back when we celebrate Epiphany on Sunday 9th January.  Meanwhile, Pastor Mark will be leading worship on Sunday 2nd January as we begin our New Year at All Saints together. So let me wish you all a very Happy New Year!

The bible readings for this Sunday will be from Sirach 24:1-12, Colossians 3:12-17, and John 1:1-5, 9-18, and we will be singing the hymns O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Silent Night, Angels from the Realms of Glory, and Joy to the World.

Christmas at the Youth Charity Foundation

Tomorrow, Thursday 30th December, we will travel out to YCF to celebrate Christmas together and give the children their Christmas presents.

We will share dinner together at 5:30 p.m. and this will be followed by a Christmas celebration!

Let me know if you need a lift or can offer one!

Christmas Services at All Saints

We had two wonderful Christmas services at All Saints this year. Firstly we had nearly 30 people gathered together for Midnight Mass, including sixteen visiting students from Chiang Mai University.  Ratcha stepped in to translate my sermon at the last minute!

Midnight Mass sermon in English and Thai!

Then on Christmas morning 65 people packed into the church to hear the Christmas message!

Christmas Morning!

A packed church!

We were again joined by a group of students from CMU – but no translation into Thai this time!

You will be able to watch video of the services via the All Saints Audio Visual page.

Christmas Lunch at the Vicarage!

Our first Christmas lunch at the vicarage was a great success with over forty people sitting down to a lunch of roast turkey and all the trimmings.

The table was set under the trees!

Ready for Lunch!

Food for All!

Thanks especially to Phyliss and Arthur for cooking the turkeys and coordinating all the food, and to Glyn for doing almost all the washing up!!! Thanks to all the other people who cooked, set-up, and tidied away!  It was a wonderful day and the last people didn’t leave until five o’clock!

Thanks to all who attended and made this such a special day.  Thanks for all the cards, gifts, and best wishes.

Praise to God – the Christ has Come!

Dear Friends,

Christmas is here!  It’s wonderful to be able to celebrate with my Chiang Mai church family this year – we have over thirty people signed up for Christmas lunch – last year mum and I were alone!

The message of Christmas remains the same however – whether we are alone or part of a great multitude – God is with us!  We see Jesus, Immanuel, come to earth to reconcile us to God and one another – this is good news indeed!

So Merry Christmas – one and all!

Our Christmas worship will take place with Midnight Mass at 11:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve and our Christmas Morning Family Eucharist at 10:30 a.m. on Christmas Day.  The bible readings will be from Isaiah 9:2-7 and Luke 2:1-20, and we will be singing the hymns O Come All Ye Faithful, Angels We have Heard on High, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Joy to the World, Angels from the Realms of Glory, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Silent Night, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!

Festival of Carols – last Saturday!

Dear Friends,

The All Saints Festival of Christmas Carols was a superb start to the Christmas season in Chiang Mai.  Representatives from the British, American, Australian, and Indian consulates read, along with other community leaders, and our singing was led by performances by Lannacappella and by the All Saints Choristers.

Lannacappella lead the singing!

A full church celebrates together!

Clarice’s Funeral

As most of you already know, Clarice, our much loved 95 year old church member, passed away on Thursday 2nd December. She had been in hospital for just over a week and died from pneumonia.  Her funeral was last Wednesday at All Saints, followed by cremation at Wat Pa Phaeng. For those of you unable to attend, the funeral can be seen via this link!

Clarice will be very greatly missed as she had become a much loved friend to many in the three years she had been attending All Saints. Our deepest condolences to all her family. She was a woman of great faith and is now with her Lord in glory!

Festival of Carols – this Saturday!

Dear Friends,

Our Festival of Christmas Carols is almost upon us!  After last year’s event was cancelled, it will be wonderful to gather once again at Thammapratheep Church in celebration of Christmas!  The service begins at 7 p.m.

On 1st December restrictions on the number of event attendees in Chiang Mai city were lifted. Please feel free to distribute tickets widely and invited your friends and neighbours.

Thammapratheep Church is a large building with seating for well over 200 people, so we will still be able to social distance.  Masks will be required at all times except for when reading from the front or the choir when singing the choir pieces.  People will be required to sign-in and have their temperature taken.

It should be a wonderful event with the Lannacappela Choir leading the singing and performing their own items, and the All Saints Choristers singing for the first time!

All members of All Saints who are attending, are requested to bring cookies or snacks to share after the service.

Our worship continues this Sunday when our bible readings will be from Zephaniah 3:14-20, Philippians 4:4-7, and Matthew 1:18-25, and we will be singing the hymns The Angel Gabriel, Of the Father’s Love Begotten, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent, and Angels we have heard on high!

Advent is Here!

Dear Friends,

We had a wonderful Advent Sunday service and potluck as we began the season in anticipation of Christmas. Advent is a time when we long for a better world with no more death or dying, a world where all will be made right! We continue in that anticipation as we mark the Second Sunday of Advent this week.

Our bible readings this Sunday will be from Malachi 3:1-4, Philippians 1:3-11, and Luke 3:1-6, and we will be singing the hymns O Come O come Emmanuel, Song of Mary, Sing We the King Who is Coming to Reign, and Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending!
