The Good Shepherd

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Jesus cares for us!

Dear Friends,

One of the most abiding images from both the Old and New Testaments is that of God as our shepherd.  It is an image of a shepherd who loves and leads his flock, one who knows each one by name. This is an image of safety and security and one in which we can firmly trust.

The readings for the Fourth Sunday of Easter will be from Acts 2:42-47, 1 Peter 2:19-25, and John 10:1-10, and we will be singing the hymns Hail the Day; The Lord’s my Shepherd (And I will trust in You alone); The Lord’s my Shepherd; and The King of love my Shepherd is!

This is Holy Week!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Good Friday Service at 7:00 pm!

Dear Friends,

This is Holy Week, that most solemn part of the Christian year.  We will mark Good Friday with our quiet, candle-lit, service of Tenebrae.

Tenebrae means darkness or shadows.  As we come to the end of Lent, we begin a journey into darkness to a place of deep shadows.  We will accompany Jesus in his last hours, witnessing the cruelties and the suffering he endures.  We will listen to the words of condemnation and ridicule.  We know that in all this he is innocent.  He is the faithful servant of God, doing his Father’s work; bringing the gospel of love, peace and hope.

And so, in this liturgy, we will be invited to walk solemnly and attentively with Jesus.  Better to know.  Better to understand.  Better to be his friend, his disciple, his witness.

And then, three days later, we will witness to Christ’s mighty resurrection in our Easter Sunday Celebration which will include the joy of four baptisms!

For Good Friday our Tenebrae Service will have readings from Matthew 26:17-29, Matthew 26:36-56, Mark 15:1-15, Mark 15:16-32, Matthew 27:45-54, Isaiah 52:13 – 53:5, and Matthew 27:62-66.  We will sing the hymns When I Survey the Wondrous Cross; O Sacred Head, Now Wounded; How deep the Father’s love for us; My Song is Love Unknown; Were You There When They Crucified My Lord; and O Love that Will Not Let Me Go!

The readings for Easter Sunday will be from Acts 10:34-43, Colossians 3:1-4, and Matthew 28:1-10, and we will be singing the hymns Jesus Christ is Risen Today; The Day of Resurrection; Christ is Alive; and Thine Be the Glory!
