Almost Christmas!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Festival of Carols – last Saturday!

Dear Friends,

The All Saints Festival of Christmas Carols was a superb start to the Christmas season in Chiang Mai.  Representatives from the British, American, Australian, and Indian consulates read, along with other community leaders, and our singing was led by performances by Lannacappella and by the All Saints Choristers.

Lannacappella lead the singing!

A full church celebrates together!

All Saints Choristers – O Holy Night!

Around 150 people attended and the evening was rounded off with refreshments of hot apple cider and cookies!

Video of the entire service can be seen here!

Our Advent and Christmas worship continues this Sunday when our bible readings will be from Micah 5:2-5, Romans 16:25-27, and Luke 2:1-20, and we will be singing the hymns O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Once in Royal David’s City, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!

Clarice will be very greatly missed as she had become a much loved friend to many in the three years she had been attending All Saints. Our deepest condolences to all her family. She was a woman of great faith and is now with her Lord in glory!

Festival of Carols – this Saturday!

Dear Friends,

Our Festival of Christmas Carols is almost upon us!  After last year’s event was cancelled, it will be wonderful to gather once again at Thammapratheep Church in celebration of Christmas!  The service begins at 7 p.m.

On 1st December restrictions on the number of event attendees in Chiang Mai city were lifted. Please feel free to distribute tickets widely and invited your friends and neighbours.

It should be a wonderful event with the Lannacappela Choir leading the singing and performing their own items, and the All Saints Choristers singing for the first time!

All members of All Saints who are attending, are requested to bring cookies or snacks to share after the service.

Our worship continues this Sunday when our bible readings will be from Zephaniah 3:14-20, Philippians 4:4-7, and Matthew 1:18-25, and we will be singing the hymns The Angel Gabriel, Of the Father’s Love Begotten, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent, and Angels we have heard on high!

Advent is Here!

Dear Friends,

We had a wonderful Advent Sunday service and potluck as we began the season in anticipation of Christmas. Advent is a time when we long for a better world with no more death or dying, a world where all will be made right! We continue in that anticipation as we mark the Second Sunday of Advent this week.

Our bible readings this Sunday will be from Malachi 3:1-4, Philippians 1:3-11, and Luke 3:1-6, and we will be singing the hymns O Come O come Emmanuel, Song of Mary, Sing We the King Who is Coming to Reign, and Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending!

Transgender Day of Remembrance Weekend

The List of the slain

Last weekend we had two moving events to mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance.  On Saturday night we held a meal and candle-lit vigil, and on Sunday morning our service included the reading of the names of those killed in the last twelve months.

Swimming at the Centre of the Universe

image.png

This is the pool where we held the afternoon for the children of the Youth Charity Foundation at the end of October.  There are three swimming pools and a restaurant within a tranquil garden setting, where you can swim, sunbathe and relax.  The water in the 25 metres lap pool, and the two children’s pools, is sanitized using a salt water system imported from Australia.

Currently, the club celebrating its 14th Anniversary, but because of Covid-19 is not throwing a pool party, but instead is offering free VIP membership to new customers who register before 31 December.  Walk-in customers usually pay 100 – 200 Baht depending on the length of time they spend at the pool. With a VIP membership, however, there is a flat entrance fee of 100 Baht with no time restrictions.

As an additional incentive, first time visitors from All Saints Church are offered a free swim which can be booked using the following link:

https://koalendar.com/e/all-saints-church

If you wish to go as a group at the same time, one person should complete the booking form and add the email addresses of up to 5 more people when prompted to do so.

Detailed maps, directions, and even a video showing how to make your “Journey to the Centre of the Universe”, can be found on their website, ChiangMaiSwimmingPool.com

Transgender Day of Remembrance 2015

Dear Friends,

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

We held the first Transgender Day of Remembrance service at All Saints on 20th November 2016 and it has become an annual event. This year, for the first time we will have a special Saturday evening gathering in addition to our Sunday morning service.  This will be held at the New Vicarage in conjunction with the LGBT advocacy organisation, MPlus.

It will be good to have some Thai-language input and also to include positive stories of trans people in Thailand.  The event will begin at 5 p.m. with registration and snacks, and then things will begin more formally at 6 p.m. with a few short presentations by different people.

It would be very good to see a lot of support from All Saints people, so be there if you can!
Then on Sunday we will have a special service beginning at the usual time of 10:30 a.m.

Our  bible  readings this week will be from 2 kings 23:1-2, 7-8, 11-12, Galatians 3:23-29, and Matthew 5:1-11,  and we will be singing the hymns Stand up stand up for Jesus, Lord we make this cry for freedom, Beauty for Brokenness, and Let Us Build a House!

This year’s wreath at the Foreign Cemetery

Dear Friends,

Today is 11th November.  On 11th November 1918 the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War.  Since then, the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, has been designated as a time to remember the victims of war.

This year the ceremony at the Foreign Cemetery is limited to fifty invited guests due to Covid restrictions.  I will not be there, but our Congregational Pastor, Rev. Mark Crawford, will be leading the observance, and All Saints member, David Cartwright, who served in the Royal Airforce, will place a wreath on behalf of the church.

But this Sunday, November 14th, is Remembrance Sunday, when we also remember those killed in two world wars and all the other victims of war.  We will have a special service at All Saints which will include the Last Post and two minutes’ silence at 11 a.m.

We must never forget the terrible destruction that war entails, for those who are killed, for those who are injured, and for those who are left behind.

Like the first people who observed Remembrance Day in the 1920s, we need to say, “never again!”

The following week we have our Transgender Day of Remembrance weekend.

On the evening of Saturday 20th November we will have an informal event, held in conjunction with MPlus, at the vicarage. This will begin at 5 p.m. and will include presentations by trans women and others.  This is the first time we have done this, so I hope many people from All Saints will be able to join us.

Then on Sunday 21st November we will have a special service beginning at the usual time of 10:30 a.m.

Finally, November ends of Sunday 28th with Advent Sunday.  We will decorate the church together and share in another potluck lunch!

Our  bible  readings this week will be from Isaiah 2:3-4,  1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, and Mark 13:1-8, and we will be singing the hymns O God our help in Ages Past,  Abide with Me, Will Your Anchor Hold, and The Day Thou gavest Lord is Ended!

Christ-Like?

Who is like Christ?

Dear Friends,

We have reached November!  It will soon be Christmas – but November is a busy month too!

This week I will be looking at the story of Ruth and Boaz.  Boaz has been called a “type” of Christ for he redeems Ruth, but have we got the right one in the story?  Who is the Christ-like one?

The following week, November 14th, is Remembrance Sunday, when we remember those killed in two world wars and all the other victims of war.  The service will include the Last Post and two minutes’ silence at 11 a.m.

All Saints Day!

Let’s Celebrate All Saints Day!

Dear Friends,

We are all saints for we are all called into God’s Kingdom, and through God’s power we are made holy.  But we can also remember the saints who have gone before – both famous people who the church has declared to be “saints”, but also those many ordinary Christian people who prayed for us and led us in the Christian life.

It is our prayer that each one of can sing “O Lord, I want to be in that number, when the saints go marching in!”

We have an exciting Sunday ahead!  Archbishop Ron will be leading us in worship, and dedicating and blessing our new altar and lectern, and the All Saints Choristers will be singing.

The new altar and lectern!

We will then go to the New Vicarage for lunch under the trees, and then Archbishop Ron will give a short talk on the meaning of the Apostolic Succession. It should all be a great time of celebration.

Our scripture readings this week will be Isaiah 25:6-9,  Revelation 21:1-6, and John 11:32-44, and we will be singing the hymns For All the Saints, The saints of God their conflict past, Father we love You, Sing with all the saints in glory, and O when the saints go marching in!

Meeting at the Youth Charity Foundation

Chris and I had a good meeting last Friday with Khun Tasnee, the director of YCF.  We were able to get a better over-view of the work of YCF and why it is needed, and this will help us develop our mission to help more in the future.

Humpty Dumpty

Dear Friends,

The nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty ends with the lines:

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again!

The theme of this week’s service is restoration – how can God put us together again?  Pastor Mark Crawford will be preaching on our Old Testament passage from the end of the Book of Job, where Job receives back what he has lost, and even more! How does God restore us?   What restoration do we need and what do we have to do?

Our scripture readings this week will be from Job 42:1-6, 10-17, Hebrews 7:23-28, and Mark 10:46-52, and we will be singing the hymns Awake My Soul, and with the Sun, Be Thou My Vision, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, and Lift High the Cross!

All Saints Chiang Mai Mission AGM

All Saints Chiang Mai Mission is the UK charity which oversees financial support of All Saints and the Youth Charity Foundation coming from the UK.  It is independent of All Saints, Chiang Mai, in Thailand.

Last night ASCMM held its Annual General Meeting on Zoom and, in addition to accepting financial and general reports for 2020, appointed Emily Chase as a new trustee.  Long term members of All Saints will remember the Chase family who worshipped with us for a number of years and helped support YCF in a number of practical ways.

I am not a trustee but act as secretary to ASCMM, and Pat Ward is the chair person.

Humility!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Worshiping God in Chiang Dao

Dear Friends,

Judging from the seating at our worship service last week, sitting on the floor is not a problem.  At our retreat in Chiang Dao many people chose to sit on the floor rather than use the uncomfortable wooden chairs.  This was not a question of humility but of comfort!

But, what does it mean to be humble?  How can we really serve one another and act as Christ did for us?  That is what we will be looking at this Sunday at All Saints. Our scripture readings this week will be from Isaiah 53:4-9, Hebrews 5:1-10, and Mark 10:35-45, and we will be singing the hymns God Whose Almighty Word,  Brother Sister Let me Serve You, From Heaven You Came, and Now Thank We All Our God!

A large group of us (between twenty and thirty depending on who you count!) has a wonderful time of peace and relaxation at The Nest, Chiang Dao, last weekend.

We had our youngest ever scripture readers!

Thanks to Katie, Christa, and all the other people who made this weekend possible!
