Answering The Call

Jesus Calling Matthew

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Old Testament passage, an elderly Abram is called to relocate.  In the Gospel passage, tax collecting Matthew is called to follow Jesus.

To what are you called?  How do we answer the call?  Join us on Sunday morning at 10:30 as we explore this exciting topic.

The readings for this Sunday  will be from Genesis 12:1-9, Corinthians 13:11-13, Romans 4:13-25, , and Matthew 9:9-13; 18-26, and we will be singing the hymns The God of Abraham Praise, Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart, When We Walk With The Lord.

Living at the Vicarage?

Large sunny bedroom

Big Ensuite Bathroom

Own sitting area!

As you may know, Ratcha is going to Paris to study for two years, and that will leave only two of us living in the vicarage. It’s a big place, so we would like a third person to be able to share. We have a large room available with its own bathroom and a private living room area outside.  You’d also be able to use all the rest of the house as well and the garden.

If you’re interested, speak to Father Iain.

Chili Night is Back!

Chili Night is back – please join us on Tuesday evening at 6 PM at the Vicarage for a meal together and relaxed community.  .

Still on Sabbatical – but back from England

Me, my brother Stephen, and Helga the Hymer Motorhome

Dear All,

I’d just like to say thank you to the people at All Saints for giving me the chance to have a sabbatical. The first one I’ve had in twelve years leading All Saints.  Mark is doing an excellent job for these three months. He is on a full stipend, whereas I have dropped down onto a half stipend for this period.

My time in England enabled me to buy a motor home, which I’ll be using later in the year with Ratcha and my mum. More importantly it enabled me to reconnect with my brother and spend more time with him than I’ve spent in decades. It was a really good time to renew our relationship.

Thanks again for this great opportunity.

Pentacost!

From Pastor Mark, All Saints Chiang Mai

The Fire of Pentacost

Dear Friends,

Last week Paddy exhorted us: “…a man with his hands raised in blessing, rising into heaven, while his disciples watch. And then — great joy. And then — back to the temple, praising God.’  After the miracle of resurrection, then the astounding ascension, what could possibly come next?

Join us as Pentacost explodes upon the scene!  Let us examine the scriptures together this Sunday at 10:30 AM.

The readings for Pentacost will be from Acts 2:1-21, I Corinthians 12:3-13, and John 20:19-23, and we will be singing the hymns Come Down O Love Divine, Spirit of God, Unseen As The Wind, O Breath of Life, O God of Burning, Cleansing Flame.

Going Up?

Dear Friends,

In Luke’s account in both the Gospel passage this week and his first chapter of Acts, we have the incredible story of Jesus ascending to heaven.
Did Jesus really ascend to heaven in front of the disciples?  What does it mean for us to have a Risen and Ascended Lord of All?  Let us examine the scriptures together this Sunday at 10:30 AM.

The readings for Ascension Sunday will be from Acts 1:1-11, Ephesians 1:15-23, and Luke 24:44-53, and we will be singing the hymns Hail The Day That Sees Him Rise, To God Be The Glory, King of Kings, Majesty, Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.

Father Iain in the United Kingdom

From Father Iain:

As many of you will know, my partner, Ratcha, has been offered a place to study French at the Sorbonne, beginning in August. The cheapest way for me to spend some time with her and to travel around is to buy a camper van in Europe. I am doing this, and so last week I travelled to the UK. I shall be back in time for Chiang Mai Pride on the 24th of May.

As you may appreciate, all the planning has taken a lot of my bandwidth over the last week, so I apologise if I haven’t been able to get back to you. I’ll try and catch up with emails and paperwork while I’m away.

My mum will not be coming this time, so please take care of her while I’m away.

Look forward to seeing you when I return.  Please pray that it all goes well and works out for the best.

Living Stones!

Dear Friends,

The New Testament passage from 1 Peter 2 this week teaches us that Jesus is the chief cornerstone on which to build our lives.  Somehow, through knowing and following Jesus, we are transformed into living stones.

What does this process of transformation look like in your life?  Join us this Sunday as we explore more deeply these themes of foundation and aliveness expressed in the following scriptures.

The readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter will be from Acts 6:1-7, 1 Peter 2:4-9, and John 14:1-12, and we will be singing the hymns Alleluia! Sing To Jesus!, Christ, Be Our Light, Called As Partners in Christ’s Service, Let Us Build A House.

The Good Shepherd!

Dear Friends,

The Gospel reading this Sunday comes from John, an eye witness to Jesus’ life and ministry.  John quotes Jesus in explaining that the sheep belonging to him will listen to his voice.  And there will be other competing voices vying for our attention.

How can we tune into Jesus’ voice so that we can receive the abundant good things he has for us?  What other voices are vying for your time and attention in 2026?

The readings for the Forth Sunday of Easter will be from Acts 2:42-47, 1 Peter 2:19-25, and John 10:1-10, and we will be singing the hymns Hail The Day That Sees Him Rise, The Lord’s My Shepherd, The King of Love My Shepherd Is.

Road to Emmaus!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Christ is with us!

Dear Friends,

The Gospel reading this Sunday tells the story of Jesus’ encounter with the disciples on the road to Emmaus. They didn’t know who he was until he broke the bread before them and they rushed back to Jerusalem to tell the good news that Jesus was risen.

How often do we fail to recognize Jesus amongst us? Maybe when he arrives in the most unexpected place. Learn more about encountering Jesus this Sunday at All Saints.

The readings for the Third Sunday of Easter will be from Acts 2:14, 36-41, 1 Peter 1:17-23, and Luke 24:13-35, and we will be singing the hymns Jesus Christ is Risen Today; Alleluia, Alleluia, Give Thanks; In Christ alone my hope is Found; and Thine Be the Glory!

Good Friday – For God so loved the World!

Dear Friends,

This Friday we remember how Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice – showing that God’s love has no limits!  Then on Sunday we will celebrate the joy of the resurrection.

Jesus came to reconcile us to God and to one another – to bring healing and wholeness and life in all its fullness.  This will be the theme of our worship on Easter Sunday!  We should be a happy, rejoicing people, even in the midst of challenge and suffering!

We have the hope that things will get better and we work for that day!

For Good Friday our Tenebrae Service will have readings from Matthew 26:17-29, Matthew 26:36-56, Mark 15:1-15, Mark 15:16-32, Matthew 27:45-54, Isaiah 52:13 – 53:5, and Matthew 27:62-66.  We will sing the hymns When I Survey the Wondrous Cross; O Sacred Head, Now Wounded; How deep the Father’s love for us; My Song is Love Unknown; Were You There When They Crucified My Lord; and O Love that Will Not Let Me Go!

The readings for Easter Sunday will be from Acts 10:34-43, 1 Corinthians 15:19-26, and John 20:1-18, and we will be singing the hymns Jesus Christ is Risen Today; The Day of Resurrection; Christ is Alive; and Thine Be the Glory!

My Sabbatical

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease nearly two years ago and I am still generally healthy. However, it is a degenerative disease and my condition will inevitably deteriorate.  While I am still well I would like to do more travelling and other activities – including more exercise to ensure I remain healthy for as long as possible.

With this in mind, I am considering going part-time.

In order to explore this, I am planning to take a three month “sabbatical” after Easter.  Mark will take on a full-time role and I will work part-time for the period to see how this goes.  We are working out the arrangements together.

Lazarus Come!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Lazarus Come Out!

Dear Friends,

Everything in the world seems to be going wrong with wars in Europe and the Middle East, and fear of war elsewhere!  We need a new start – a metaphorical resurrection, maybe!  However, our Old Testament and Gospel readings this Sunday speak of real resurrection!  Firstly we read about the dry bones in Ezekiel being clothed with flesh and receiving God-breathed new life!  Then we hear about the raising of Lazarus from the dead!

We Christians are a resurrection people!  We have new life to share with the world!  This is the Good News of Jesus!

The readings for the Fifth Sunday of Lent will be from Ezekiel 37:1-14, Romans 8:6-11, and John 11:1-6, 17-27, 38-45, and we will be singing the hymns All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name; Days of Elijah; One Bread, One Body; and Alleluia, Sing to Jesus!
