Pentecost Last Year!

Dear Friends,

When I returned to the U.K. in March I wasn’t really expecting to be still here at Pentecost!  But here we are!  After Pentecost we enter what is called “Ordinary Time” but this year it will be anything but ordinary!

It is perhaps hard to be all fired up and full of the Spirit when we are alone – after all, the disciples were “all together in one place” when the Holy Spirit came!  But we are where we are and God is with us, and think how exciting it will be when we can finally meet together again!

But right now, I am still in England, and in Chiang Mai it is 40°C in the shade.  Worship in person, with masks, no air-conditioning or fans, and no singing either, does not seem attractive!  Not to mention the increased risk of Covid-19 to the more elderly members of our congregation!  So, as agreed by all the All Saints Trustees, for now we will continue as we are – worshipping together from our homes around the world – for he is risen, and the Holy Spirit is coming!

We will virtually meet again this Sunday at 6 p.m. in Thailand, to worship together.  (7 a.m. in New York, midday in the U.K., and 1 p.m. in Europe and Egypt!)

Our scripture readings for this Sunday will be Acts 2:1-21, 1 Corinthians 12:3-13, and John 7:37-39, and we will be singing the hymns Come Down O Love Divine, Spirit of God Unseen as the Wind, O Breath of Life Come Sweeping Through Us, and O God of Burning Cleansing Flame!

Our service will consist of our usual Eucharistic worship!  All are welcome to join in the prayers and liturgy, to listen to the readings and sermon, and to receive virtual communion if they feel comfortable.

If you want to receive virtual communion then have a small piece of bread and a small glass of wine or grape juice prepared.

Thursday Discussion Group

We will again meet at 8 p.m. Thai time this Thursday for our discussion group.  This week we will discuss how we show Christian love in the time of Covid-19.  Richard Rohr’s short meditation will be the springboard for our discussion and can be found here!  The link to the Zoom meeting is here!

Dear Friends,

This week we will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension.  This Thursday is Ascension Day, and in place of our weekly discussion I invite us all to watch this video of the service for Ascension Day 2018 from Wakefield Cathedral in the UK.

Wakefield is a northern former mining town, and its cathedral is not Westminster Abbey or Canterbury Cathedral, or the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York!  It is a small cathedral with a volunteer choir – and it is good to watch and see what is possible – and good to worship too!

Life continues at All Saints, though virtually!  Ivan celebrated his 88th birthday on Tuesday, and a group from the Youth Charity Foundation travelled up to the villages to take food bought with our donations.

Food for a family!

The children of the Youth Charity Foundation are part of our community too, and we sent THB 32,000 from church funds and individual donations!

Donations can still be given – see the information below!

We worship a risen and ascended Christ.  That means that Jesus is with us everywhere – just as the Father and the Spirit are with us everywhere – for God is with us!  Jesus wasn’t just a good man and great teacher, he is God among us, still Immanuel!  Join us to celebrate this Sunday!

Olive’s View of All Saints!

Dear Friends,

This wonderful picture was drawn by Olive Degler, one of the youngest people at All Saints!  She was asked to draw a picture of her church and this is what she produced!  It shows that we are a worshiping community – centred on the Eucharist – although I’m not sure whose dog that is!  I am told the man sleeping on the left-hand side is Mark Crawford!!!

How do you see All Saints?  Last week we sang the hymn The Church’s One Foundation, that clearly states that the church’s foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord.  In our Gospel reading this Sunday Jesus promises to ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit. We worship a God with community at the centre of God’s being.

The children of the Youth Charity Foundation are part of our community too, and it is great that we have been able to send them over THB 30,000 from church funds and individual donations to help some of their families.

Caring for All – YCF Families

Most of the children at the Youth Charity Foundation come from poor hill-tribe villages.  Some are orphans, and others have families who are too poor or unable to care for them.

At this time of crisis, many of the children’s families are in severe financial difficulty.  Many make a small income by selling their produce in local markets, but now this is totally impossible and they are destitute.

We asked Khun Tasnee at YCF how we can help.  They have proposed that they journey to some of the children’s villages to provide food parcels for some of the families.  They have identified ten families who are especially in need and we will provide a food parcel worth THB 3,000 to each family.

We will provide money for this project directly from church funds, as we commit to give 10% of our yearly surplus away, but any extra donations will mean we can do more and perhaps help on an ongoing basis.

Dear Friends,

Our Old Testament reading this week is from Genesis chapter eight and tells of the escape from lock-down of Noah and his family.  We haven’t been confined in an ark for seven months, but we have been severely constrained in our movements.

On Tuesday I drove the 40 miles to my house in Manchester, through the stunning scenery of the Peak District National Park.  It was great to get out of the city – and a reminder of what we are missing.

As restrictions ease, we will be looking on Sunday at what this means to us as Christians.

Meanwhile we have opportunity to help those in need via the Youth Charity Foundation, and you can read about that in Caring for All – YCF Families below!  Please give generously!

Caring for All – YCF Families

Most of the children at the Youth Charity Foundation come from poor hill-tribe villages.  Some are orphans, and others have families who are too poor or unable to care for them.

At this time of crisis, many of the children’s families are in severe financial difficulty.  Many make a small income by selling their produce in local markets, but now this is totally impossible and they are destitute.

We asked Khun Tasnee at YCF how we can help.  They have proposed that they journey to some of the children’s villages to provide food parcels for some of the families.  They have identified ten families who are especially in need.

These are the families YCF has identified as most needing assistance due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.  I recommend we provide these families with food assistance of Baht 1,000 each.  YCF staff will shop and put together the packages and make the deliveries. It will require a 3 day trip to each area.  The families are spread out.

K. Tasnee asked if we could pay for the fuel cost for the YCF vehicle. This will be a commitment to All Saints of 10,000 baht and fuel cost of approximately Baht 1,500.  I think it would be appropriate to give our congregation an opportunity to make a separate donation for this project if they would like too.

The YCF staff also came up with suggestions for a more permanent plan to relieve the poverty of some of the families.  We can discuss these at another time. I think they would be attractive projects for the congregation and the YCF to work together on.

Bill followed up:

I met again today with K. Tasnee.  We discussed the timing of the first delivery.  They will go next Wednesday to Chiang Rai. They will check to see if they need any special permission to travel.  We also discussed the difficulty of the journey to reach the recipients and decided that 1,000 Baht worth of food is too small for the difficulty and effort involved.   A Baht 1500. pack of groceries would be better.

I think with the church’s 10,000 baht plus some extra donations we can reach Baht 15,000. + 2,000 for fuel.   The optimal desired amount per family would be Baht 3000.  We settled on 1,500 as a doable amount with the hope we can generate some additional funds through special donations.  The optimal amount would be 30,000. + 2,000. for fuel.

We will provide money for this project directly from church funds, as we commit to give 10% of our yearly surplus away, but any extra donations will mean we can do more and perhaps help on an ongoing basis.

Military Defense?

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Gospel reading, Jesus calls himself the gate for the sheep.  He would have been using a very familiar image.  He says “I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep…. I am the gate for the sheep.”

As you all know, I have rabbits.  I have previously, at different times, had a dog and cats, but rabbits are very different.  Like sheep, they are prey animals.  Again and again we have strengthened the defenses in my Chiang Mai garden to keep dogs out.

Keeping them safe!

Last week, two dogs again got in to the garden, and my friend, Cross, built the new defenses shown in the photo at the top of the page!  Am I a good shepherd of my rabbits?  Well, I do my best but still have been unable to completely keep predators out.  Dogs are a threat to the bigger rabbits and cats to the babies.  Snakes could threaten both!

But Jesus is the Gate and the Good Shepherd!  He says: “Whoever enters by me will be safe, and will come in and go out and find pasture…. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

In the midst of this pandemic we are ultimately safe, for we are in God’s hands.

Going nowhere fast?

Dear Friends,

This is dragging on!  We’re probably all feeling like we’re on the road to nowhere – going nowhere fast!

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading we read of two unnamed disciples hightailing it out of Jerusalem – it was already getting dark but they were determined to put as many miles between themselves and the failed mission of Jesus as they could.  (We would probably just value the chance to go anywhere!!!)

But in the words of the hymn, “Lo! Jesus meets them, risen from the tomb!”  He appears to them on the road, just as he appeared to the women by the empty tomb that morning, and as he would appear to the disciples hidden in the upper room that night.

Maybe we are asking where God is in all this?  The answer is, God is with us in the midst of it, God is with us as we shelter alone, God is with us in illness, loneliness, despair, or even in our times of peace and contentment!

Worship at Home

Dear Friends,

This is the Easter Season – it should be a time of rejoicing, a time of resurrection, yet for many of us it is a time of lockdown and isolation.

I have had enough now, I want to get back to Thailand, I want to be able to meet with friends, to eat together and share fellowship, to worship with others, side by side, face to face!

We have managed to worship online and done a reasonable job – but how much longer will this go on for?  I have friends in Thailand and the Philippines who have lost their jobs and are in very difficult situations.  Our friends in the Anglican Church of India are struggling to provide food to the people there who are destitute, who cry “How long Oh Lord?”

But perhaps it is like that first Easter day.  We read in this week’s Gospel reading that the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews.  The disciples were “self-isolating” not from fear of disease, but from fear of the authorities.  They were afraid, but Jesus came and stood among them and their whole view changed – but not quite!  They actually stayed largely hidden until Pentecost seven weeks later, when the Holy Spirit came!

God willing, in seven weeks time we will be a little bit back to normal, but until then we can know that Jesus is risen and God is with us!

Christ is risen from the dead!  Alleluia!

Good Friday in 2018

Dear Friends,

This will be a Holy Week like no other.  From Rome to Jerusalem, New York to Chiang Mai, churches will stand empty!  But, God’s people will still be “meeting” together, we will still be remembering the events of Good Friday and celebrating the joy of Easter Day!

At All Saints you can join us at 6 p.m. on Good Friday and Easter Sunday on the Zoom app.  The services will later be available on YouTube for those who can’t manage Zoom.

Our Palm Sunday gathering!

6 p.m. in Thailand, is midday in the UK, 1 p.m. in Europe and Egypt, and 7 a.m. Eastern Standard Time in the US.  We will again be joined by friends around the world!

In this time of lock-down, health workers, and others, around the world are risking their own lives to save others.  They could chose to stay safely at home, to “self-isolate” like most of the rest of us, yet  they are putting their lives on the line for us!  This can be a metaphor for the Christ who chose to go to the Cross for us.  Who, in the Garden of Gethsemane, said to the Father, “Your will, not mine be done!”, who was urged by the thief on the Cross to “Save himself!”, and yet did not!

It is the calling on our lives, where called upon, to lay down our lives for others too!  May we remember this this Holy Week of 2020!

Good Friday last year!

Meanwhile, let us worship God together and give thanks for all we do have!

On Good Friday we have a special Tenebrae Service at 6 p.m.  This is a solemn and moving service of hymns and readings, where candles are extinguished as the service progresses through the last days of Jesus life leading up to the crucifixion!

Our scripture readings for Good Friday will be Matthew 26:17-29, Matthew 26:36-56, Mark 15:1-15, Matthew 27:45-54, Isaiah 52:13-53:5, and Matthew 27:62-66, and we will sing the hymns When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, O Sacred Head Now Wounded, How deep the Father’s love for us, My Song is Love Unknown, Were You There When They Crucified My Lord, and O Love that Will Not Let Me Go!

Easter Sunday last year

Then on Easter Sunday we will have our joyous resurrection Eucharist also at 6 p.m. Our scripture readings for Easter Sunday will be Acts 10:34-43, 1 Corinthians 15:19-26, and John 20:1-18, and we will be singing the hymns Jesus Christ is Risen Today, The Day of Resurrection, Christ is Alive, and Thine Be the Glory!

Our Easter Sunday service will consist of our usual Eucharistic worship – and we will have some hymns this week!  All are welcome to join in the prayers and liturgy, to listen to the readings and sermon, and to receive virtual communion if they feel comfortable.

If you want to receive virtual communion then have a small piece of bread and a small glass of wine or grape juice prepared.  Whether “virtual communion” is effective is something for a theological discussion, but I am sure that God will bless our actions at this time if we act in a loving and reverent manner.

Last Week’s Worship!

Dear Friends,

Last year we paraded into church singing Hosanna and waving palm branches.  This year we will be waving our palm branches alone in our homes!

I hope you can join us this Sunday!  This is the link to this week’s “meeting”.  Just click here before the service on Sunday to join.

Those crowds shouting hosanna would now be forbidden by rules on social distancing.  The Passover week festivities would have been cancelled and the Temple and synagogues closed.  Jesus would have been able to ride into Jerusalem on a donkey, but only if his journey was “strictly necessary!”

Last Year’s Palm Sunday Service!

These are strange and unprecedented times.  Even in World War I and II the churches remained open and people were able to celebrate the Christian feast together.

But… God is with us!  And we can count our blessings.  We may be confined to our homes, but we have homes, and we have food to eat and beds to sleep in, and friends to talk to – even if it is remotely!

Yesterday we had our All Saints Trustees Meeting via Zoom, and we have decided to continue paying our organist and cleaner in full during this time – they need our continuing support.

The trustees also agreed to send THB 15,000 to Bishop Henry of the Anglican Church of India, with whom we are developing links.  He is stuck in the US, but he and his wife has been buying food for the destitute in their congregation using their credit cards!  Things will be hard for people in Thailand, but they will be catastrophic for many in India!

Hopefully, the children of the Youth Charity Foundation will again join us in our worship this week, and we will see how we can help them also!

Our Worship Last Sunday

Let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.

Dear Friends,

We are now an online church!  We will meet online again this Sunday using the Zoom platform at the slightly later time of 6 p.m. Thai time.  This is to enable friends in the US to join us.  Anyone can join us from around the world.  6 p.m. in Thailand is 11 a.m. in the UK, midday in Europe, 1 p.m. in Egypt, and 7 a.m. in New York.  Please join us it would be great to be joined by friends from around the world!

This week Christa Crawford will be preaching.  Her preaching was scheduled long before this all began, but it will be great to hear her online though not in person!

These are strange times.  As I said at the end of last week’s service, you will be feeling very stressed even if you don’t realise it!  This will make us lose patience with one another, become angry with the person in the supermarket or at immigration, and it will make people lose patience with us!

Being aware of this can help.  Some of us just spent four weeks studying forgiveness – now we will all have the opportunity to put that into practice!  None of us are perfect, we will make mistakes and say the wrong thing.  As our liturgy says, we will sin through ignorance, through weakness, and through our own deliberate fault.  We need to be loving and forgiving people!

which passes all understanding,
keep your hearts and minds
in the knowledge and love of God,
and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Sustainer,
be among you and remain with you always.
