Dear Friends, It is ironic that our New Testament reading on Sunday is all about our freedom in Christ, when I am forced to self-isolate!
I returned to All Saints last Sunday, but started to feel unwell on Monday night, and on Tuesday morning tested positive for Covid. The first night was quite unpleasant and I didn’t get much sleep with constant coughing, but now I am mainly feeling tired with cold symptoms and sleeping most of the time.
We have informed the people who were in church last Sunday, and so far there are no other cases. Mark will be leading worship this Sunday. I hope to be back with you the following week.
Our scripture readings for this Sunday will be 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14, Galatians 5:1,13-25, and Luke 9:51-62, and we will be singing the hymns O Worship the King, God is Love, Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart, and Now Thank We All Our God!

Dear Friends, I shall be back with you this Sunday after my rather exhausting trip to the UK. The highlight was my mum’s birthday celebration, where 64 people turned up over a twelve hour, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., buffet marathon!
It was great to be joined by All Saints members Pat and Julia, plus two other members of the All Saints Chiang Mai Mission board! The weather was great and everyone had a good time celebrating together and saying goodbye.

I will return from my time away in the UK just in time for Ordinary Time. After the three seasons of Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, the church colour changes back to green all the way until the start of Advent!
But, it is not called Ordinary Time because everything is ordinary, or even boring!!! Ordinary comes from the root ordinal meaning counting, and it is called Ordinary Time because we now count the weeks since the Feast of Trinity!
God is with us – so how can anything be ordinary – let alone boring? Let us open our hearts to God’s love and see God working in our world once more!

Dear Friends, I am in the UK getting over my jetlag as I help mum sort out her house for sale! It is a task which requires a practical questioning of what is really important: after a lifetime of acquiring this and that, what do we need to keep and what can be thrown away?
At his Ascension, Jesus demonstrated that even keeping his physical presence on Earth wasn’t as important as his ability to send the Holy Spirit! While he held on to the physical, he couldn’t be with us everywhere and always through the Holy Spirit. This omnipresence is what we celebrate at Pentecost!
We live in the physical, but love, relationship, God, and truth, are beyond. These are the eternal things we should really value!
With the easing of Covid restrictions, most of All Saints regular attendees are travelling, so if you are in Chiang Mai this Sunday please attend and give Mark a congregation to preach and minister to!!!

Love is at the centre of the Christian faith, and this Sunday, as well as celebrating the Ascension – this Thursday is Ascension Day – we will be focusing on that love once again!

Dear Friends, Over the last couple of weeks, Ratcha has made me watch the entire series of Harry Potter films in order – something I had never done before.
In the last episode (spoiler alert!) Harry Potter is killed by his arch-enemy, Voldemort, but then comes back from the dead due to his possession of the Resurrection Stone. JK Rowling, who is a Scottish Episcopalian, has said this is an allegory of the life, death, and resurrection, of Jesus.
However, in the Hogwarts franchise, the final film ends with Harry and his friends sending their own children off to the wizarding school nineteen years later. This is very different than the story of Jesus where forty days after his resurrection he ascends into heaven. An event we will mark next Sunday.
In this Sunday’s Gospel reading Jesus promises that although he will go away he will send “another comforter”, the Holy Spirit. He even says that is why he is going away! This is what we will explore this Sunday.

Dear Friends, After a wonderfully busy weekend last week – with two ordination services in addition to our usual Sunday service – we return to normal this week! I shall be down in Bangkok ordaining a deacon to begin a student congregation there, and Mark will be leading worship at All Saints.
Our Gospel reading this week reminds us that Jesus is the Good Shepherd and that we are safe in his arms! This message of love is the heart of the gospel and we have good news to share!

Dear Friends, It is wonderful to have Archbishop Ron Langham with us once again for three ordination! We are very grateful that he is willing to assist us in this way!
The Gospel reading for this Sunday is Jesus’ resurrection appearance on the Sea of Galilee, when he calls upon Peter to “Feed my sheep!” That is what all of us called to Christian leadership are called upon to do and we will be re-affirming that this week!

The Youth Charity Foundation in Hua Hin
The beautiful “Christian Mission Cottages” The YCF children had a wonderful time in Hua Hin. Thanks to all who gave to make this possible!

It was hard work for the leaders, though! I preached at two sunrise devotions and one evening devotion, and led three two-hour bible studies.

The highlight of the week was the Wednesday morning baptism service, when nineteen of the older children were baptised!

For half the children it was the first time they had seen the sea, and one of the boys cried because the food was so plentiful and his family back home have so little.
Relaxing over-looking the sea! The most challenging part was supervising the children in the sea! You nearly lost your pastor when one of the girls got into difficulties and I had to swim out to pull her back in! I was praying very hard indeed as I struggled against the current, but thank God that all was well and no one was lost!
Altogether it was an exhausting but very worth-while week!

Our Solemn Remembrance Good Friday Service at 7 p.m.
Dear Friends, This year’s Holy Week seems to have crept up on us unawares. Lent quietly flew by, and Easter is almost upon us. With the lessening of the Covid threat, people are travelling for both work and pleasure, and many of our regulars are out of town. It will be a relatively quiet Easter, but I suppose that’s not unlike the first one. Yes, there were crowds shouting “Crucify him!”, but at the crucifixion itself Jesus was largely alone with only a handful of his women followers left to sustain him. It was these same women who would three days later be the first witnesses to his resurrection.
So, if we are fewer in number this year, we would do well to remember that first Easter and Good Friday. Jesus’ love for the whole world was revealed not to crowds of thousands, but to a small group of ordinary people – and that is who we are! So let us remember that the message of Good Friday is that God is here for each one of us, and God’s love has no limit.
The scripture readings for Good Friday will be an account of the last week of Jesus’ life leading to the crucifixion, and we will be singing the hymns When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, O Sacred Head, Now Wounded, How deep the Father’s love for us, My Song is Love Unknown, Were You There When They Crucified My Lord, and O Love that Will Not Let Me Go!

The Youth Charity Foundation in Hua Hin
The YCF annual trip to the sea was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. They are finally going next week, and mum and I will be joining them.
Please pray that all may be renewed and refreshed, and that all would go well in travel and in Hua Hin. And pray for me as I lead the bible study for the older children.

Dear Friends, It is hard to believe that this Sunday is Palm Sunday already and Lent has passed!
This Sunday marks the anniversary of the first appearance of our choir of children from the Youth Charity Foundation. In the year of its existence it has grown from 18 to 24 members, and this week we hope to have most of them in attendance! Please pray for the children of YCF that they may be protected from another Covid outbreak, and be able to go to Hua Hin for their annual holiday this year. They were unable to go in 2020 and 2021.
We will begin our worship by parading down the street next to the church waving palm branches and declaring the power of God to save! In these stressful times, it is important to remember that God is with us!
