From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

The New All Saints?

Dear Friends,

This year looks likely to be one of the most exciting in the life of All Saints.  If all goes well we may be in a new building next Christmas!

The plans for our new place are still in an early stage, but I have been tasked with getting legal agreements, costings, and building schedules together by the end of January!  We want to have a place with room for worship and room to expand our service to the people of Chiang Mai!

We probably won’t have pews initially, but the picture above gives an idea of what the sanctuary might look like.  The building will be approximately 10m x 20m which is twice the size of where we are now, and should comfortably seat 80 people!

The building on the left in this picture is the existing house, which we will use for fellowship, coffee, potlucks, church office, and children and youth work!  The exacted positioning of the church is yet to be decided.  (There are also other buildings behind and on either side of the land which are not shown – it is not in the middle of green fields!)

Let us pray that God’s will is done, and be ready to dig into our pockets to enable things to happen!

Perhaps our altar won’t be quite so grand!

Meanwhile, I am have a much-needed week off, and this Sunday Mark Crawford will be presiding and Nate Tipton will be preaching. Our readings will be Isaiah 43:1-7, Acts 8:14-17, and Luke 3:15-17, 21, 22, and we will be singing the hymns Let All the World in Every Corner Sing, On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist’s Cry, Break Thou the Bread of Life, and Christ is made the Sure Foundation!

Bill Moeller

Bill is still in Bangkok Hospital, recovering from his emergency hip operation.  He is hoping to be home soon and then would appreciate visitors!  Please continue to hold him in your prayers!

Dear Friends,

We have reached the end of a wonderful and eventful Advent and Christmas Season.

One of the highlights was the visit to the Youth Charity Foundation on Christmas Eve as we went bearing gifts for the children!  Epiphany, the Twelfth Night of Christmas, which falls this Sunday, is when we remember the visit of the Wise Men to Jesus!

The Wise Men also came bearing gifts, of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and they represent the homage of all the nations being brought to Christ.  They also remind us about giving!  We will have a momentous 2019 at All Saints – as we enter our sixth year we are proposing to build our own building – this will indeed be a year of giving for us all!

Gifts for the YCF children from All Saints

All Saints is not here just for us, although we all receive a great blessing from being part of God’s family here in Thailand, it is here to proclaim and demonstrate God’s love to the nations gathered in Chiang Mai!  We are just at the beginning.  As we build, it is not to look inwards but so that we can even more look outwards as we grow, and so take God’s love to all around us, both Thai and Farang!

God is with us – and will be with us in 2019!  Let us rejoice and be thankful this year!

The Christmas season ends this Sunday, and our readings for Epiphany are Isaiah 60:1-6, Ephesians 3:1-6, and Matthew 2:1-12, and we will be singing the hymns We Three Kings of Orient Are, The First Nowell, As With Gladness Men of Old, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!

On New Year’s Eve, Bill, one of our most faithful members and an All Saints Trustee, fell and broke his hip.  On New Year’s Day, he had a hip replacement in Bangkok Hospital. He is on the mend, but please hold him in your prayers!

Dear Friends,

Every year on Christmas night my Grannie would say sadly, “It’s as far away as ever!”  My family loved Christmas, and still do, and that phrase has become a family tradition.

Well, the Christmas season is not over yet, but we have had Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and what wonderful days they were at All Saints this year!

Christmas Eve began with ten of us driving up to the Youth Charity Foundation orphanage in Doi Saket, to deliver Christmas presents and hand over the money raised at our Festival of Carols.  Thanks to all who contributed  towards the gifts for the children, and special thanks to the Chase family who bought and individually wrapped more than forty presents!

Then later that night, we gathered at All Saints for Midnight Mass.  The church looked stunning as we welcomed the Christ-Child and celebrated the first mass of Christmas!

Then, less than twelve hours later, we were back at the church for our Christmas Day service.  This was attended by over fifty people, and at all three of our Christmas services the music was led magnificently by Robert Rose on our organ.  He and his wife, Jean, were visiting from Doha!  Many, many, thanks to them.

Then, following the service, forty of us sat down to a magnificent Christmas lunch – it was the best yet – turkey and all the trimmings, including roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, followed by Christmas pudding, apple pie, and ginger cookies!  Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this a success: to Emily, Ken, Pamela, Pat, Julia, Nate, Elena, David, Helga, and so many more!

Dear Friends,

Christmas is now truly upon us!  Perhaps it is difficult to feel Chrismassy when the sun is still shining and there’s no sign of snow, but the season is here when we welcome Christ into the world and into our lives once more!

Please join us this Sunday at 11 a.m., then on Christmas Eve for Midnight Mass at 11:30 p.m., then again on Christmas Day at 11 a.m.

Our Christmas Day service will again be followed by a sit-down Christmas lunch.  It is still possible to sign-up if you would like to join us.  The best way would be by email to Emily Chase on emilylschase@gmail.com.

The meal is free but people will need to sign-up so we can calculate numbers, and people will be allocated things to bring!  Please sign-up this week as Christmas Day is almost upon us!  Donations towards the cost of the turkeys would also be welcome.  (They were $100 each!)We are family, and nobody should be alone at Christmas!

This was a wonderful event with over two hundred people in attendance and over THB 30,000 raised for the Youth Charity Foundation orphanage!

Thanks to all the many people who worked so hard to make this a success, to so many people from All Saints, to Lannacapella for singing, to Remi for playing the organ, and to Chiang Mai Christian School for allowing us to use the historic 1868 First Church.

Last Sunday we also had another collection for the forty-four children of the Youth Charity Foundation to buy each one of them a Christmas present.  We shall be taking them their gifts on either Christmas Eve or Boxing Day!

Ardahanreeswara Award

On Wednesday 12th December I travelled down to Bangkok to receive the Ardahanreeswara Award for Strengthening and Empowering LGBTI Community.  This was given for the work of All Saints in welcoming gay and trans people, and shows that our work is nationally recognised in this area.

This Saturday at 7 pm

Dear Friends,

Christmas is upon us, and we will begin our celebration of the Christmas Season at 7 p.m. this Saturday as we gather in the chapel of Chiang Mai Christian School. The Festival of Carols should be a wonderful event – please invite your friends but make sure they get there early for a seat!

If you are able to help with the set-up, please meet at All Saints at 10 a.m. this Saturday to help with transportation and the decoration of the chapel at the school!  We need to move the organ, the sound system, lights, chairs, an altar, and many smaller decorations, etc.  We have a small truck coming to help move the larger items, but many hands will help make things easier!

Later, please be at the chapel by 6 p.m. if you can, to help with ushering, etc!  After the service, we will then need help with refreshments and then taking down decorations and moving everything back to All Saints!

Our singing will be led by the Lannacapella Choir!

After an exciting, and probably exhausting, Saturday night, we will then gather once again at 11 a.m. Sunday morning to mark the Third Sunday of Advent.

Our readings this Sunday will be Zephaniah 3:14-20, Philippians 4:4-7, and Matthew 1:18-25, and we will be singing the carols Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus; Of the Father’s Love Begotten; and O Come, O Come, Emmanuel!

The House and Land!

Dear Friends,

Last Tuesday night the All Saints Trustees met to consider the way forward for All Saints.  There were a number of items on the agenda, but he most significant and exciting was the proposal to move to a bigger and better facility!

We have been offered a house and land with a ten-year extendable lease and a nominal rent.  It is a great location in Pa Tan, and within the Superhighway.  The house will provide place for potlucks, church office, children’s work, and possibly somewhere for me to live!  The land is big enough for us to construct a purpose-built sanctuary!

The Trustees voted unanimously in favour of approving the proposal to develop the site, and I will now be finding accurate costings and producing a proposed timeline, as well as agreeing the terms of the actually rental contract.

The House!

This is an amazing opportunity and will enable All Saints to continue to grow and expand our ministry to all!  At this time of Advent, as we wait expectantly for the coming of Christ at Christmas, we can give thanks and look forward to all God’s wonderful provision. Hopefully, firm details will be available by the end of January!  Who knows, we may be able to host next year’s Festival of Carols in our own building!

Meanwhile, this year’s Festival of Carols is nearly upon us, and details of how you can help are below.  This week we will gather together to celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent as we look at the Angel appearing to Mary.

Our readings this Sunday will be Isaiah 40:1-11; Philippians 1:3-5, 9-11; and Luke 1:26-38; and we will be singing the carols O Come, O come Emmanuel; Song of Mary; and The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came! Past services and sermons can be viewed via the All Saints audio-visual page!

Festival of Carols – One Week to Go!

Our Festival of Carols is only just over a week away!  It is going to be a wonderful night, and hopefully one which will raise a lot of money for the Youth Charity Foundation orphanage!

If you would like to offer practical help, we will gather at All Saints at 10 a.m. on the morning of Saturday 15th, to pack things up and transfer them to Chiang Mai Christian School Chapel.  We need to move the organ, the sound system, lights, chairs, an altar, and many smaller decorations, etc.  We have a small truck coming to help move the larger items, but many hands will help make things easier!

Help will then be needed in setting everything up and decorating the chapel, as well as assistance after the service in taking everything down, and transporting it back to All Saints!  Just come along if you can help!  There will also be a short meeting after church this Sunday about providing refreshments after the Festival and arrangements for Christmas Day!

Posters and free tickets are now available at the church.  We will need lots of people to take these this week for placing in shops, businesses, and schools!  Please take some to share!

POTLUCK THIS SUNDAY!

This Sunday is Advent Sunday and we will mark the beginning of Advent as we prepare once more to celebrate the coming of Jesus!  The service will be followed by a special potluck – people are invited to bring soup, bread, sandwich fillings, cookies and treats, or apple juice, to share, as we decorate the church for Christmas!

Thank God for the Earth!

Dear Friends,

Our Season of Remembrance is drawing to a close and Advent will soon be upon us!

Last week we had a very moving service to mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance, and video of the sermon and reading of names can be viewed now.  It was great to again be joined by people from MPlus, the Chiang Mai LGBT organisation, and have them take part in the service.

God has blessed each of us in so many ways that we should be thankful people.  Sometimes we are, but then we forget to say thank you!  In this weeks service we will express our thanks to God for the wonder of his creation, and commit ourselves anew to protect the environment and all that God has given!

Remembering Together

Dear Friends,

This is the third week of our Season of Remembrance.  The 20th November is marked as the Transgender Day of Remembrance throughout the world.  This Sunday at All Saints, we will be joined by people from MPlus, the Chiang Mai LGBT advocacy group, to mark the day.  This year we have a list of 368 people who have been killed in the last twelve months because of who they are and how they appear.  It is far from a complete list, and most of the people listed are from the US and South and Central America, with a few from India, Pakistan, and Turkey.

Transgender people occur throughout the world and frequently suffer exclusion and marginalisation, leading to exploitation and abuse.  This week’s service is a chance for all of us to stand alongside these people in solidarity.

Our readings this Sunday will be 2 kings 23:1-2, 7-8, 11-12, Galatians 3:23-29, and Matthew 19:3-13, and we will be singing the hymns Stand up Stand up for Jesus, Lord We make this Cry for Freedom, Beauty for Brokenness, and Let Us Build a House!  Past services and sermons can be viewed via the All Saints audio-visual page!

New House Group

Of course, we all have different experiences and knowledge about trans people, and for those who would like to know more, Ken and Emily Chase are hosting a get-together at their home next Wednesday, 21st November.  The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and Elena Kelly will lead and share some of her experiences.

After the very successful Lent Meetings, it is hoped that this will develop into a regular meeting for All Saints people who live to the north of Chiang Mai, with other groups later also developing.

Festival of Carols

This Tuesday, Pamela Chase and I went to look at the Chiang Mai Christian School chapel to plan the decoration for our Festival of Carols – it is going to look amazing!  Then this Wednesday, I popped in to All Saints to hear the Lannacapella Choir rehearsals – they are already sounding amazing!  Bill Moeller and Chris Tananone are part of the choir and it looks like being the best performance yet!

It is going to be a wonderful night, and hopefully one which will raise a lot of money for the Youth Charity Foundation orphanage!  Posters and free tickets are now available at the church.  Please take some to share!

We pray for an end to all war!

WORSHIP BEGINS AT 9:30 AM THIS WEEK

Dear Friends,

This Sunday will mark the hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War, and we will remember this in our worship this Sunday.  All Saints’ regular Sunday service will begin at 9:30 a.m. to enable those who wish to attend the ceremony at the Foreign Cemetery to do so.

Immediately following this morning’s service at All Saints, we will travel down to the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery for the Remembrance Ceremony.   This will begin around 10:45 a.m. so that we can observe two minutes silence at 11 a.m.

Everyone is then invited to lunch at the Gymkhana Club.

Remembrance Sunday is in no way a day to celebrate war, it is a day to mourn, to commit ourselves to the goal that war should cease.  While wars rage around the world, particularly in Syria and Yemen, this may seem a futile goal, but we are called to never give up, and we believe in the future when there will be a new heaven and a new earth, and war will be no more!

Our readings this Sunday will be Isaiah 2:3-4, Revelation 21:1-6, Matthew 25:1-13, and we will be singing the hymns O God our help in Ages Past, Abide with Me, and The Day Thou gavest Lord is Ended!
