Water to Wine!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

What do we expect?

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,
In this week’s Gospel reading we see Jesus turning water into wine!  Is this what we expect when we come to church at All Saints?  I don’t mean a literal miracle during the communion service, but a transformation of the ordinary into the extraordinary, the mundane into the exceptional!

Some churches could be accused of turning wine into water – taking the amazing good news and challenge of the Gospel and watering it down so much that there’s nothing left – a Christian homeopathy where the concentration of goodness is so dilute as to be scientifically undetectable!

Why do you come to church?  Habit?  Now, there’s nothing wrong with having good habits – sometimes it is only our regular patterns of life that get us through the dark times – but in the long-run our church-going must be more!  We should go because we are excited to be part of a living, loving, worshipping community – that’s why Zoom or recordings of services can never be a true substitute!

So, come get that wine on Sunday – don’t settle for water alone!

The readings for this Sunday will be from Genesis 14:17-20, Revelation 19:6-10, and John 2:1-11, and we will be singing the hymns All Creatures of our God and King; Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing; I am the Bread of Life; and A Mighty Fortress!

Sermon Video

Every week I spend some hours recording, editing, and uploading the video of the Sunday sermon.  If I include the whole service the time spend is proportionally longer.  Very few people are watching the recordings so in 2024 we will only record some of the sermons and services.

If you do watch the recordings each week and would really miss them, then email me on iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com

We are also thinking of changing from Zoom to YouTube Live as it offers much better quality!

God Calling!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

What are you called to?

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,
At the beginning of this New Year, our scripture readings are all about calling!  We begin with the calling of the boy Samuel in the Old Testament, and in our Gospel reading we hear of Jesus calling Philip and then Nathaniel to be his disciples.

Are we prepared to answer the call of God on our lives?  Can we say with Samuel, “Here I am Lord!”?  Will we say “yes” to Jesus’ call to “follow me”?

Find out more this Sunday at All Saints!

The readings for this Sunday will be from 1 Samuel 3:1-20, Revelation 5:1-10, and John 1:43-51, and we will be singing the hymns Praise my Soul the King of Heaven; I, the Lord of Sea and Sky; I will offer up my life; and Tell Out My Soul!

Magi Visit Jesus!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Come and Worship!

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,
This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Epiphany when Magi from the East came to visit Jesus, bringing their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  They are traditionally known as the “Three Wise Men” or “Three Kings”.

The Wise Men were wise because they came to Jesus – but what about us?  Will we be wise in 2024?  What are our plans for the new year?  What star will we be following?

Let us pray that we follow God’s guidance in the year ahead!

The readings for this Sunday will be from Isaiah 60:1-6, Ephesians 3:1-6, and Matthew 2:1-12, and we will be singing the carols We Three Kings of Orient Are; The First Nowell; As With Gladness Men of Old; and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!

Dear Friends,
Christmas is suddenly here!  Join us in celebrating the coming of the Prince of Peace!  Whoever you are – you are welcome to join with us!

With the state of the world where civil conflict rages in so many places, we all need the message of Christmas – the message of peace and goodwill, of love and forgiveness.  Even those cheesy Christmas movies have something to teach us!

The message of Christmas is that God is with us, and God loves us, whatever we’re going through, however we may be struggling.  God is with us – and the people of All Saints stand with you too!

Come celebrate – and seek for peace with us – this Christmas!

You are also invited to the vicarage for New Year’s Eve!

Christmastime!

Join us as we celebrate!

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,
Christmas is very nearly upon us – we had a wonderful Festival of Christmas Carols last Saturday, which you can watch below!

This week we have a “normal” Sunday, and then we have four services over the Christmas weekend – five if you count the one at the Youth Charity Foundation.

Our weekend begins with our first-ever Thai Christmas service on the evening of Saturday 23rd.  Then on Christmas Eve we will mark the Fourth Sunday of Advent in the morning, followed by Midnight Mass that night!  On Christmas Day we will have our Christmas Morning Eucharist!  (Each service will have a different preacher – so know need to worry about repetition!)

Christmas is all about the coming of the Prince of Peace – and our world certainly needs peace today!  It is strange how that title of Jesus is usually confined to Christmas, for forgiveness and reconciliation – which are the prerequisites for true peace – are at the heart of the gospel!

Come celebrate – and seek for peace with us – this Christmas!

The scripture readings for the Third Sunday of Advent will be from Isaiah 61:1-4,      1 Thessalonians 5:16-24, and Matthew 1:18-25, and we will be singing the carols O Come All Ye Faithful; Angels from the Realms of Glory; In the Bleak Midwinter; and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!

Jesus reigns – despite appearances to the contrary

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,
When we see the state of the world, it’s hard to believe, as Robert Browning wrote, that “God is in his heaven, and all’s right with the world!”  But, as Christians, we do believe that God has won the victory and that, in the end, all will be well!  Meanwhile, we work to build God’s kingdom on earth and to try to make the world a better place for all.

This week we will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, and the following Sunday is Advent Sunday when we begin our preparations for Christmas by decorating the church and sharing a potluck together.  We long for the coming of Jesus to bring peace on Earth and herald good will to all!

The bible readings for the Feast of Christ the King will be Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24, Ephesians 1:15-23, and Matthew 25:31-45, and we will be singing the hymns  The King of Love My Shepherd Is; When I needed a Neighbour; The Servant King; and Sing We the King Who is Coming to Reign!

Transgender Day of Remembrance – All is Prepared!

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,
Our annual Season of Remembrance concludes with the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

A few years ago I helped organise a vigil after a mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub.  I was attacked on social media for organising the event: “Why for them and not other victims of violence?” was the accusation.  I had no answer except to say that this event had particularly touched me personally, and if we organised a vigil for every group of victims in the world, we would hold one every day.

Every year several hundred trans people, mostly transwomen, and mostly transwomen of colour, are killed because of who they are.  This number is small compared to the more than ten thousand innocent civilians killed in Gaza over the last month – this is greater than the number of civilians killed in Ukraine in nearly two years, and the population of Ukraine is twenty times larger.  The daily death rate in Gaza is therefore 400 times that of the Ukraine conflict. We must not forget!  We remember them in our prayers each week, and remembered them in our Remembrance Sunday service last week.  But one death doesn’t cancel another, and we at All Saints have trans members and friends.  We can remember and honour both.

In a slow dispersed ongoing-massacre trans people are killed, often in the most brutal way, because of their gender expression.  Many are subject to extreme domestic violence and others are targeted by strangers.  So at a time when trans women themselves, are often portrayed as a threat to society in the western media, we need to continue to stand in solidarity with this persecuted minority.

Of course, domestic violence is not limited to transwomen.  Many women of all sorts are subjected to the most terrible treatment, and we remember them too.

The bible readings for the Transgender Day of Remembrance will be Jeremiah 23:1-6, Galatians 3:23-29, and Matthew 25:14-30, and we will be singing the hymns Stand up stand up for Jesus; Lord, we make this cry for freedom; Beauty for Brokenness; and Let Us Build a House!
