From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Who is Jesus?

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Gospel reading, Jesus asked the twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.’

Jesus had lost many supporters and followers after he spoke of eating his flesh and drinking his blood.  (See my sermon from last week.)  He then questions his disciples: will they leave too?  Suddenly, it’s about more than following a good teacher, it’s about knowing and acknowledging the Holy One of God!

Who do you think Jesus was?  Who do you think Jesus is?  That is what we will be considering this week at All Saints.

Funeral of Father Ian Cragg

Some of you will remember Father Ian Cragg, who attended All Saints from 2014-16.  He died earlier this week, and his funeral will be tomorrow (Thursday) at 10 am at the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery.  Please join us if you can.  May he rest in peace!

Harvest Festival

We are planning our annual harvest festival, hopefully for Sunday 16th September!  Watch this space for confirmation and more details.

All Saints Hymnal

The draft of the All Saints Hymnal is now complete including most of the hymns we have sung regularly over the last five years.  I have now to add in the new suggestions you have submitted! Please let me have any other ideas as soon as possible, or you will miss this chance to help develop our worship at All Saints!

Theology on Tap – Tomorrow Night

Theology on Tap will restart this week!  We will meet on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the UN Irish Pub.  This is a great opportunity to have a drink, or a meal, and have an open conversation about some aspect of Christian theology.

This week we will talk about salvation.  What is it, and what does it mean to you?  No previous knowledge is required, just come with your eyes open and your brain engaged!  No view is too strange or too simple!  All are very welcome!

Dear Friends,

Anger is a very natural and human emotion.  Jesus was angry at times when faced with hypocrisy and injustice, and anger isn’t necessarily always wrong.  But in this week’s epistle, Paul writes “Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger…”  What does this mean to us?  How should we handle anger and how do we keep loving, even in the midst of anger and injustice?

Our scripture readings this week will be 1 Kings 19:4-8, Ephesians 4:25-5:2, and John 6:35, 41-51, and we will be singing the hymns When Morning Gilds the Skies, I am the Bread of Life, One Bread One Body, and When in our Music God is Glorified!

The essentials for life?

Dear Friends,

It’s great to be back in Chiang Mai.  After a much-needed break, I am back in the saddle and raring to go!  Lots of things are happening, and this should be an exciting year at All Saints!  Many thanks to Mark, Nate, Herb, Gene, and many others, for making everything run so smoothly in my absence!

In Philippians 4:19 Paul writes: My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory.  But what does that mean?  What are our needs?  And will God really supply them?

According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, at the most basic level we all need air, water, food, sleep, clothing, and shelter.  He defines these as Physiological Needs.  Other needs, less basic but still necessary, are arranged in a pyramid.  At the top he places self-actualization, that feeling of being who we were meant to be, as Christians we would say being the person God created us to be.

Which ones of these will God provide?

Well, Paul says that God will supply all your need!  We will look at how this can be, this Sunday!

All Saints Chiang Mai Mission

Last Friday the documents were submitted to register All Saints Chiang Mai Mission as a UK charity.  This will enable All Saints to recover tax paid by UK donors and provide further accountability and oversight for the work of All Saints.

Work on registering All Saints as a Thai Foundation will begin soon!

Hello from a hot and sunny England!

The week the Rev. Mark Crawford will be preaching at All Saints!  Our Gospel Reading this Sunday tells the story of Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand!  God provides for us – but we are also called on to provide for each other!  Our deacon, the Rev. Dr. Gene Bourquin, will again be here this week, and the Rev. Mark Crawford will be presiding at the communion.

I will be back next week on the 5th August!

Is persecution coming?

Dear Friends,

Persecution as Christians is not about being forced to bake wedding cakes!  All around the world, Christians are persecuted for their faith, sometimes for nothing more than worshipping.  But in every country, we can suffer persecution when we stand up for justice and for what we believe to be right.

In “Christian countries” like the Philippines, priests are being killed for standing with the poor against injustice, and anywhere that we oppose those who are powerful consequences will follow.  Some people want their stories to be told, others have to remain silent, for their own safety and the safety of others.

But, as Christians we are told to expect persecution.  As Paul wrote in this weeks New Testament reading: I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.  Of course, we should all hope for a peaceful and contented life, but when and if the time comes, we are called to stand up for Jesus!

Serving the World

Some people have rightly asked what we are doing at All Saints to be of service to those around us.  Well, we are doing a lot.

The people of All Saints are working or volunteering in more than half a dozen NGOs and charities, including relief organisations, orphanages, groups working with old people and with children, combating human trafficking, advancing human rights, and others.  There are many opportunities if you would like to get involved.

I would like to make a list of all the organisations with which we are involved.  Please let me know any groups that you are involved with and I will make a list which we can put on our website.  We won’t list the names of those working with each group, but just the organisations!

Healing, Wholeness, or Cold Hard Cash?

Dear Friends,

What is the secret of happiness?  Do we need healing, wholeness, or cold hard cash?  Our scripture readings and sermon this week focus on these issues.  What is it to be wise and how can we best follow the example of Jesus and bring healing and wholeness to the world?

Serving the World

Special Service Focusing on Children in Special Need!

Dear Friends,

The Feast of The Holy Innocents usually falls on 28th December, but we will be marking it on the 24th June as we remember the plight of children around the world!  If you can, wear red to show your support for those in our prayers.

The world is being rocked by images of children separated from their parents on the US/Mexican border.  Whoever is responsible, and whatever the cause, few disagree that this must stop.  Christian leaders from across the political and theological spectrum have spoken out!  Thankfully, President Trump has now signed an executive order to stop this, but time will tell what happens next.

We at All Saints are far away and we may ask what can we do?  Well we can pray, and we can write, and we can remember all the children in our world who suffer from loss of parents, war, famine, abuse, and all the other scourges of the world.  And we can keep on working to make the world a better place.

Our scripture readings this week will be Jeremiah 31:15-17, Revelation 21:1-7, and Matthew 2:13-18, and we will be singing the hymns The Coventry Carol, When Jesus Went to Egypt, Oh Lord the Clouds are Gathering, and Stand up stand up for Jesus!   The second hymn in particular focuses on the plight of those children held in detention facilities, but all follow our theme.

Dear All,

People around the world have been shocked at the images of children separated from their families and held in detention centers at the US/Mexican border.  Thankfully, President Trump has now signed an executive order halting this policy, after an outcry from Christian and other leaders from across the political and theological spectrum.

At All Saints, Chiang Mai, this Sunday, 24^th June, we will have a special service marking the Feast of the Holy Innocents.  This usually falls on 28th December but these recent events have moved us to mark the feast this week.  The Holy Innocents were the children killed by King Herod in his attempt to kill the baby Jesus after his visit by the Wise Men.  We will use this occasion to remember all children, particularly migrants, who are in danger now.

The service will begin at 11 a.m. this Sunday, and we are asking people to wear red, the colour of martyrs, to show their solidarity with children around the world.
