Trans people and church members last year!

Dear Friends,

Our annual Season of Remembrance concludes with the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Every year several hundred people are killed, often in the most brutal way, because of their gender expression.  Many are subject to extreme domestic violence and others are targeted by strangers. At a time when trans women themselves, are often portrayed as a threat to society in the western media, we need to stand in solidarity with this persecuted minority.

Of course, domestic violence is not limited to transwomen.  Many women of all sorts are subjected to the most terrible treatment, and we remember them too.

The bible readings for this Transgender Day of Remembrance will be Jeremiah 23:1-6, Galatians 3:23-29, and Matthew 5:1-11, and we will be singing the hymns Stand up stand up for Jesus; Lord, we make this cry for freedom; Beauty for Brokenness; and Let Us Build a House!

Lest we Forget!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Dear Friends,

This week we mark Remembrance Day on Friday 11th November, and Remembrance Sunday on Sunday 13th November.

Remembrance Day began as Armistice Day to mark the end of the First World War on the 11th November 1918 at 11 a.m. UK time.  (Midday Central European Time.)  Since then a minutes silence has been held each year on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.  At the end of the Second World War this became two minutes silence to commemorate the dead of the two world-wide conflicts. It has now become a time to remember all those killed in all subsequent wars and armed conflicts around the world, and to redouble our efforts to work for peace!

From the very beginning the two phrases associated with Remembrance Day are “Lest we forget” and “Never Again!”

This year I have been asked to officiate at the Remembrance Day observances at the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery.  The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by refreshments at the Gymkhana Club.  All are welcome! Our observation of Remembrance Sunday at All Saints, will follow on Sunday 13th November, again beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The bible readings for this Remembrance Sunday will be Isaiah 2:3-4, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, and Luke 21:5-19, and we will be singing the hymns O God our help in Ages Past, Abide with Me, Will Your Anchor Hold, and The Day Thou gavest Lord is Ended!

November!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Season of Mists!

Dear Friends,

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Decking with liquid pearl the bladed grass

I didn’t study much poetry at school, and remember even less.  One poem which has stuck in my mind, however, is John Keats’ poem To Autumn, although the literary minded amongst you may realise that the second line I “remembered” is not part of Keats’ poem.  Mr Google tells me it is part of Lysander’s opening speech in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream!

Whatever the case, November in the UK and northern hemisphere is a season of Autumn leaves, apple-bobbing, and the nights drawing in!

However, at All Saints, November is our Season of Remembrance!

It begins with All Saints Day when we remember and give thanks for Christians who have gone before us.  This is followed by Remembrance Day on 11th November, and Remembrance Sunday on 13th November. Then we mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance on Sunday 20th November.

It is good to remember, and give thanks, but this must spur us on to create change so that war and injustice can cease, and finally these remembrances become remembrances of the distant past!

The bible readings for this Sunday will be Job 19:23-27, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17, and Luke 20:27-38, and we will be singing the hymns Praise my Soul the King of Heaven; Lord Jesus Christ (Living Lord); I am the Bread of Life; and Tell Out My Soul!

We are All Saints!

POTLUCK THIS SUNDAY!

Dear Friends,

All Saints Day is when we remember that we are all saints – and also remember the Christian people who have gone before us as examples in the faith! We may remember our grandparents, that teacher at Sunday School, or that friend who was always there for us. As we hold our Celebration for All Saints Day this Sunday, we remember those who have gone before and rejoice that we are part of a community of love and care!

Some of the All Saints Choristers will also be with us, reminding us that we are a people of all ages from many different nations.  It will be a time of thanksgiving and praise! Our service will be followed by a potluck at the vicarage!

The scripture readings for this Sunday will be 2 Esdras 2:42-48, Hebrews 12:18-24, and Luke 6:20-31, and we will be singing the hymns For All the Saints; Bless the Lord Oh my Soul; Father, we love You; Sing with all the Saints in Glory; and O when the saints go marching in!  The choir will be singing Dear Lord and Father of Mankind!

Humble!

Rev. Peter Tarleton will be ministering this Sunday

Dear Friends,

Peter Tarleton will be preaching at All Saints this Sunday and it’s appropriate that the theme is humility for Peter is a humble man!  He has offered to preach and celebrate communion at what will probably be our smallest service of the year as most of us will be on retreat in Chiang Dao!

Last week we had one of the biggest attendances of 2022 as we were joined by all of the All Saints Choristers made up of children from the Youth Charity Foundation, but this week numbers will be much smaller.

Our Gospel reading tells the story of the boastful Pharisee and the humble, contrite, tax-collector.  It is the humble man who goes home right with God!  Peter will unpack this more on Sunday.

Meanwhile, thanks to all who made the Choir Intensive weekend such a great success!!!  The kids had a wonderful time!  The choir will also be singing what they have learned and composed at our Celebration of All Saints Day on Sunday 30th October!

The scripture readings for this Sunday will be from Ecclesiasticus 35:12-17, 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18, and Luke 18:9-14, and we will be singing the hymns Morning has Broken and Christ, Be Our Light!

This week’s service will not be on Zoom.

Last Week’s Choir Intensive Service

Video of the whole service is now available on here!

Thanks to all who made the whole weekend possible.

Joe leads the session!

Thanks to Paddy for being the most “active” participant, and thanks to mum for helping arrange so many practical things and the buying of all the drinks and snacks.

Off to lunch!

Mide leads!

Thanks to Kaew for being part of our choir team and providing such great leadership from the keyboard. Thanks to Denise for practical assistance – who would have thought you could cut pizza with scissors!!  Thanks to Pat and Julia for planning to help – I hope you are better Pat – have a good time in Malaysia! Thanks to Mark and Hannah for heading up the Child Protection procedures.

And thanks to those who provided financial assistance to make all this possible – you know who you are!!!!

Finally, thanks to Joe and Mide for leading such a fantastic weekend!  Your teaching and energy is an inspiration – the kids loved you!

It was a wonderful three days!

All gathered together!

Thanks everybody!

Trip to Chiang Dao – This Weekend!

Our third church weekend at The Nest in Chiang Dao is this weekend from Friday 21st to Monday 24th October.  (The Monday is a public holiday!)   It will be a great time to escape the city and enjoy fellowship together surrounded by the beauty of nature!

Rev. Peter Tarleton will be leading worship at All Saints for those who remain in Chiang Mai.  Please come along to support Peter if you are still in town!
