Transgender Day of Remembrance!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Ready for Transgender Day of Remembrance this Sunday

Dear Friends,

Today, 20th November, is the Transgender Day of Remembrance.  We will hold a special vigil tonight, and also mark the event on Sunday 23rd with a special service.  Please come if you can to support the trans community.  Our vigil will be a non-religious ceremony in Thai and English held, weather permitting, in the Vicarage garden.

All Saints and transACTIONrefuge will be joined by the LinQ Foundation and the Thanthayar Foundation in hosting the event and refreshments will be provided.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

This is the twelfth year that All Saints has observed the Transgender Day of Remembrance, but this year it’s different.  Countries which were previously safe for trans people are becoming increasingly hostile so it is more important than ever that we stand united with the trans community.

Being trans is not really the feeling of “being born in the wrong body”, it is rather the realisation that you are not being treated as the person you really are inside because of the way people perceive your body.  Trans people, whether transmen, transwomen, nonbinary people, femboys, toms, or gender nonconforming individuals, claim the right to be themselves, and express themselves how ever they wish.  Thus the slogan trans rights are human rights as it is a cry for all people to chose who they are.  Whether people take hormones or have surgery is a secondary and personal matter, the key issue is the freedom to be yourself in safety and freedom.

Special Service this Sunday

The bible readings for this Sunday will be 2 Kings 23, Acts 8:26-40, and Matthew 19:3-12, and we will be singing the hymns Stand up stand up for Jesus; Lord, we make this cry for freedom; Beauty for Brokenness; and Let Us Build a House!

Remembrance!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Ready for Transgender Day of Remembrance Sunday on 23rd November

.

Dear Friends,

At All Saints, November is our Season of Remembrance!

It began with All Saints Day when we remembered and gave thanks for Christians who have gone before us.  This was followed by Remembrance Sunday on 9th November and Remembrance Day on 11th November, when we remembered all the victims of war.

We will hold a vigil for the Transgender Day of Remembrance on Thursday 20th November, and also mark the event on Sunday 23rd with a special service.

This is the twelfth year that All Saints has observed the Transgender Day of Remembrance, but this year it’s different.  Countries which were previously safe for trans people are becoming increasingly hostile.  This is particularly true of the United States where government officials have labeled trans people as both “mentally ill” and “domestic terrorists”.

In the US, access to trans-affirming healthcare, particularly for minors, is being severely curtailed, and the federal government is attempting to subpoena medical records of trans children.  It is possible that in the near future attempts may be made to prosecute parents of trans children for “child abuse” and take the children into care.  State by state, laws are being introduced to deny the use of appropriate bathrooms and even ban the discussion of transgender issues in educational institutions or the use of preferred names and pronouns.   Trans members of the US military have already lost their jobs, and employment may become increasingly difficult in other situations.  Attacks on transgender individuals are increasing.

The UK is also becoming an increasingly hostile environment for trans people with a countrywide ban on trans people accessing single-sex spaces appropriate to their gender, including bathrooms, changing rooms, and refuges.  There is a total ban on gender-affirming care for minors and moves to ban the use of preferred names and pronouns in schools.  Other formerly safe countries are seeing similar restrictions imposed.

Within this region, large numbers of Chinese trans people have also sought safety in Thailand. Thailand is quickly becoming a haven for trans and LGBTQ people.

In response to all this, six months ago All Saints began the transACTIONrefuge program.  This is a project involving All Saints members and others which seeks to assist trans people and families to relocate to Thailand.  In addition to practical assistance we provide a welcoming and affirming community for those forced to flee. We have already helped several families and individuals to successfully relocate here and are in touch with many more who are considering moving.  We are expecting several more families and individuals to arrive soon.  We plan to provide practical but also psycho-social support.

That is why, in addition to our regular Sunday service, we are this year holding a candle-lit vigil at the vicarage on Thursday 20th November, the Transgender Day of Remembrance itself.  Please join us if you can to show your support and solidarity.  We are hoping to be joined by a number of Thai organisations also.  (See below for details!)

It is good to remember, and give thanks, but this must spur us on to create change so that war and injustice can cease, and finally these remembrances become remembrances of the distant past!

The bible readings for this Sunday will be Job 19:23-27, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17, and Luke 20:27-38, and we will be singing the hymns Praise my Soul the King of Heaven; Lord Jesus Christ (Living Lord); I am the Bread of Life; and Tell Out My Soul!

Lest we Forget!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Dear Friends,

This week we mark Remembrance Sunday on Sunday 9th November and then, two days later, on Tuesday 11th November, I will lead the Remembrance Day Observance at the Foreign Cemetery.  Please assemble at 10:30 a.m.  Directions to the Foreign Cemetery can be found here!

Remembrance Day began as Armistice Day to mark the end of the First World War on the 11th November 1918 at 11 a.m. UK time.  (Midday Central European Time.)  Since then a minutes silence has been held each year on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.  At the end of the Second World War this became two minutes silence to commemorate the dead of the two world-wide conflicts. It has now become a time to remember all those killed in all subsequent wars and armed conflicts around the world, and to redouble our efforts to work for peace!

From the very beginning the two phrases associated with Remembrance Day are “Lest we forget” and “Never Again!”  In the light of the on-going conflicts in Ukraine, Myanmar, and the Holy Land, these words have never been so apt.  We pray for the end of hostilities and a just and lasting peace for all.

The bible readings for this Remembrance Sunday will be Isaiah 2:3-4, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, and Luke 21:5-19, and we will be singing the hymns O God our help in Ages Past, Abide with Me, Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus, and The Day Thou gavest Lord is Ended!

In this month’s Theology and Tap, we’ll watch a video with Dr. Jemar Tisby discussing the hard truths about how race and power shaped Christianity in the United States and how we can come together to imagine a better path forward. The video will be followed by group discussion.

Virtual Garage Sale

A Garage Sale is a North American tradition where people empty-out their unwanted possessions (often stored in a garage) and put them for sale in their yard.  In England we have “car boot sales” for a similar purpose.

The disadvantage of a traditional garage sale is that you need somewhere to store all the stuff and people may have things to dispose of at different times!  Hence… a Virtual Garage Sale!

This is how it will work:

1) Bring your item to church, or the MCC Office, or send Sarah a photo and description if that’s easier!
2) Sarah will advertise the item online.
3) People can buy the item online and then collect or have it sent by Grab delivery.

Hopefully, we will raise much needed money for church funds!

All Saints Day

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Dear Friends,

All Saints Day is when we remember that we are all saints – and also remember the Christian people who have gone before us as examples in the faith!

We may remember our parents and grandparents, that teacher at Sunday School, or that friend who was always there for us.

As we hold our Celebration for All Saints Day this Sunday, we remember those who have gone before and rejoice that we are part of a community of love and care!

The All Saints Choristers will also be with us, reminding us that we are a people of all ages from many different nations.  It will be a time of thanksgiving and praise!

Our service will be followed by a potluck at the vicarage!

We have a busy month ahead, with All Saints Day, Remembrance Sunday, and Transgender Day of Remembrance Sunday.  And then we will be into Advent!  But God is good, and we can give thanks and pray for our world together!

The readings for this Sunday will be from Revelation 7:9-17, 1 John 3:1-3, and Matthew 5:1-12, and we will be singing the hymns For All the Saints; For all the Saints who’ve Shown your Love; Bless the Lord oh my soul; Sing with all the Saints in Glory; and O when the Saints go Marching in!
