From Ken Chase for All Saints Chiang Mai

Dear Friends,

Our Wednesday Night Group will start NEXT Wednesday, 5th February.  We will be meeting at the home of Joel Akins.  Call or email for the address, or see next Sunday’s bulletin.  The meeting will begin at 7pm, but we will meet  at 6pm, and go to a local eating place first.  The group should last about an hour and we will discuss possible activities at our first meeting.  We may study a book together, share, pray, read the bible, or a mixture of these.  It should be a great way of better getting to know and support one another.

On the following Sunday, 9th February, we will have a pot-luck meal following the service.  Please think about what you could bring to share!

Before then, however, we will have our usual weekly Eucharist this Sunday.  This week’s bible readings are: Micah 6:1-8, 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, and Matthew 5:1-12, and we will be singing the hymns All Creature of our God and King, Beauty for Brokenness, For the Bread Which You Have Broken, and Men of Faith Rise Up!

Dear Friends,

All is well at All Saints, and most people are back from their

Christmas travel.  Our Covenant Service went well last week as we committed ourselves to God and each other for another year.

Our Wednesday night discussion group should be starting on 5th February, Joel had offered to host at his home near Nimmanhiman Road, so we may meet there – see the bulletin for details. We will probably go for a meal first.  Exact timing and location are still to be confirmed.

This week’s readings are Isaiah 9:1-4, 1 Corinthians 1:10-18, and Matthew 4:12-23,and we will be singing the hymns Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty,Jesu, Jesu, Fill us with Your Love, Let us Break Bread Together, and Let Us Build a House.

After the service we will share coffee and biscuits at the house and go for lunch at the Thai restaurant further up Pa Ton Road.

Dear Friends,

Iain is back from Bangkok, and we will really begin our new year at All Saints this Sunday, with part of the Methodist Covenant Service.

Iain writes: “The Covenant Prayer, developed by John Wesley, makes us focus on our commitment to God as we begin a new year together.  New Year is a time to take stock of things past, and to look forward to the future. Those of us from a Methodist background will be familiar with the prayer, but it is also increasingly being used by churches of other traditions, too.”

The prayer is challenging and is copied below so that we can read and consider it before we meet for worship on Sunday.

The Methodist Covenant Prayer

I am no longer my own but yours.
Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will;
put me to doing, put me to suffering;
let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you,
exalted for you, or brought low for you;
let me be full, let me be empty,
let me have all things, let me have nothing:
I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things
to your pleasure and disposal.
And now, glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
you are mine and I am yours.
So be it.
And the covenant now made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven.’

This week’s readings follow the theme of our covenant with God and are: Isaiah 49:1-7, 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, and John 1:29-42, and we will be singing the hymns All creatures of our God and King, Come, let us use the grace divine, Wonder of wonders, here revealed, and Let all the world, in every corner sing.  If the words are not well known to a couple of our hymns this week, the tunes should be familiar.

 Dear Friends,

Haley and I are now back in Thailand after a great Christmas break in Cairo.  Father Ian Cragg will be leading our worship this Sunday, as Iain is away at an Ecumenical Seminar near Bangkok.

This week’s readings are: Isaiah 42:1-9, Acts 10:34-43, and Matthew 3:13-17, and we will be singing the hymns All People that on Earth do Dwell, Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun, Let us Break Bread Together, and Love Divine, all Loves Excelling.  Next week’s worship will include parts of the Methodist Covenant Service, as we commit ourselves to serve God together in this new year.

Iain is thinking of starting an informal small group on Wednesday nights, where those who wish to, can meet to share, pray and study the faith together.  Feedback is warmly welcomed.  This will probably begin in February.

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year to all!  I pray that 2014 will be a blessed year for you and all who you love!  I fly back from England on Friday and will arrive in Chiang Mai on Saturday lunchtime, Ken and Haley will be back on January 9th.

This Sunday we resume our weekly worship at All Saints, Chiang Mai.  We will be celebrating the feast of Epiphany and our readings will be Isaiah 60:1-6, Ephesians 3:1-12, and Matthew 2:1-12.  We will be singing the carols We Three Kings of Orient Are, The First Nowell, As with Gladness Men of Old, and Joy to the World!

Dear Friends,

Merry Christmas to one and all!

This Sunday will see our last service before Christmas, and we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus and all that his coming means for the world.  Next Monday I travel to the UK where I will be spending Christmas with my family.  I will miss many of you over the holiday season.

Our Services will recommence on Sunday 5th January when we will celebrate the Feast of Epiphany.  During the break, you may wish to join the Seven Fountains Retreat Center services.  They have worship in English on Christmas Eve at 6:30 pm and on Christmas Day at 9:30 am. More details can be found on their website at thesevenfountains.org.

Dear Friends,

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat!  We only have two services before Iain leaves for the UK for Christmas, so let’s make the most of our time to worship together!  This week we will be celebrating the Second Sunday of Advent and looking at the Angel Gabriel appearing to Mary and Mary’s response.  The following week, on 15th December, we will have our Christmas service – ten days early!

Dear Friends,

Last week’s offering, which was for the Philippines Disaster Appeal, was THB 5,140. This is more than four times our usual offering.  Iain has transferred £100 to the Disasters Emergency Committee Philippines Typhoon Appeal.  Thanks to all who gave generously to support our brothers and sisters in so much need!

Iain will be away on Sundays 22nd and 29th December, and Haley and I will probably also be travelling, so there will be no services at All Saints on those days.  Services will restart on Sunday 5th January.

Meanwhile, we will enter the season of Advent on Sunday and will be lighting the first candle of our Advent Crown. This week’s readings are Isaiah 2:1-5, Romans 13:11-14 and Matthew 24:36-44, and we will sing the hymns O Come, O come Emmanuel, Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun, Sing We the King Who is Coming to Reign, and Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus.

Dear Friends,

I am writing to remind you that this Sunday’s offering will be given to support those who have suffered in the terrible situation in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan.  You may have already given, but if not, this gives us an opportunity, as a church, to give to those in need and to show solidarity with those who are suffering.
