Dear Friends,

We celebrated a wonderful Harvest Festival at the Youth Charity Foundation last Sunday as we gathered together – old and young, rich and poor, Thai and farang – but all one in Christ.  This theme of All are Welcome continues in our worship this week as we read in this Sunday’s Gospel how Jesus welcomed those considered to be of little value in his society,

The readings for this Sunday will be from Genesis 2:18-24, Hebrews 1:1-4, 2:5-12, and Mark 10:2-16, and we will be singing the hymns Let All the World in Every Corner Sing; In Christ there is no East or West; Let us Break Bread Together; and Stand up stand up for Jesus!

HARVEST THANKSGIVING
Meet at All Saints at 10 a.m. or YCF at 11 a.m.

Dear Friends,

Every year we drive out to the Youth Charity Foundation to celebrate our Harvest Thanksgiving, but for most of us the only harvesting we do is in the supermarket or at the restaurant salad bar.

The children of YCF are a little closer to the soil, and the above picture shows them working in the rice harvest in August.

In a land of plenty like Thailand, it is easy to take food for granted, yet our world still sees acute food shortages due to war such as those in Gaza and Sudan.  As we give thanks, we must also remember those in need, and pray and work to make this world a safer place where all are fed and live in safety.

The readings for the Harvest Thanksgiving this Sunday will be from  Deuteronomy 8:7-18, Philippians 1:21-30, and Matthew 20:1-16, and we will be singing the hymns Come, Ye Thankful People, Come; Bless the Lord oh my soul; We Plow the Fields and Scatter; and Days Of Elijah!  The Choir will be singing Still and What a Wonderful World!

New QR Code – Use it Now!

The Church Council met three weeks ago and discussed ways to increase the giving at All Saints – and how to make it easier.  Many people don’t carry cash or have the right change, so we have published a QR code on the bulletin to enable people to transfer directly into the church bank account.

You can scan with the banking app on your phone and specify the amount you would like to give.

The payment is into the church account which is in Father Iain’s name and is controlled by Arthur, our treasurer.  Account transactions require the authorisation of two different church council members.

We will also suggest that people make a donation of THB 100 on Chili Night.

Wisdom!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Wisdom, who is she?

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,

Wisdom appears in the wisdom literature of the Old Testament and throughout the Old Testament Apocrypha.  But who is Wisdom?  In the New Testament, she becomes he – the Word made flesh – for Wisdom is the Word of God!

So why was Jesus revealed as the Son of God and not the Daughter of God?  Well maybe God knew that in first century Palestine nobody would listen to a woman – perhaps not much has changed even now!  In any case, Jesus’ gender is not important.  What is important is that Jesus is God with us, the Word of Wisdom made flesh.  Find out more at All Saints this week.

The readings for this Sunday will be from Proverbs 1:20-33, James 3:1-12, and Mark 8:27-38, and we will be singing the hymns Immortal, invisible, God only wise; Come and Seek the Way of Wisdom; Holy Spirit, We Welcome You; and Holy Wisdom, Lamp of Learning!

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus restores a man’s speech and heals the daughter of a Syrophoenician woman.  How do we understand healing and wholeness?  Deacon Gene will be preaching on this passage for us this week.

The readings for this Sunday will be from Proverbs 22, James 2:1-17, and Mark 7:24-37, and we will be singing the hymns O Worship the King; To God be the Glory; O Christ, the Healer; and O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing!

New Candles?

You may have noticed that we have new candles on our altar at All Saints, but actually they are not candles – they are oil lamps!  Hopefully they will reduce smokiness in the church and be easier and cheaper to maintain!

Discernment Committee

Both our deacons, Christa Crawford and Gene Bourquin, are sensing a call to the priesthood.  To help clarify these callings, All Saints has setup a discernment committee.

The committee consists of a cross-section of the congregation, male and female, young and old. The members are Chris, Maureen, Paddy, Peter, and Charlotte.  They held their first meeting after church last Sunday.

If you yourself are feeling a call to ordained or other ministry at All Saints, please speak to a member of the clergy or church council.
