Hypocrisy!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Whitewashed Tombs

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,

In Matthew 23:27 Jesus says:

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.”

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading, they targeted Jesus’ disciples for not washing their hands and Jesus denounces them for their obsession with outward appearances while neglecting inner intentions.  What do we look at – outward appearances or the heart?

The readings for this Sunday will be from Song of Solomon 2:8-13, James 1:17-27, and Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23, and we will be singing the hymns Jesus shall Reign; What shall I Do, my God to Love; Called as Partners in Christ’s Service; and Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah!

Pool Day – This Saturday!

We are holding a church pool day at the Centre of the Universe Pool this Saturday, 31st August.  We will gather at the pool at 2 p.m. and move to the vicarage for pizza at 5 p.m.

New QR Code

The Church Council met last Sunday and discussed ways to increase the giving at All Saints – and how to make it easier.  Many people don’t carry cash or have the right change, so we will publish a QR code on the bulletin to enable people to transfer directly into the church bank account.

We will also suggest that people make a donation of THB 100 on Chili Night.

Discernment Committee

Both our deacons, Christa Crawford and Gene Bourquin, are sensing a call to the priesthood.  To help clarify these callings, All Saints has setup a discernment committee.

The committee consists of a cross-section of the congregation, male and female, young and old. The members are Chris, Maureen, Paddy, Peter, and Charlotte.  They will hold their first meeting after church this Sunday.

If you yourself are feeling a call to ordained or other ministry at All Saints, please speak to a member of the clergy or church council.

Eat My Flesh!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Give us this day our daily bread!

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,

Many years ago when I was teaching in Egypt, I was on a school trip and had a conversation about religion with one of the teenage students.  The boy, who was Muslim, said to me: “Is it true that the Jews have a ceremony when they believe they drink human blood and eat human flesh?”  “No”, I had to reply, “That’s what we Christians do!”

For most of us, Jesus’ words “This is my body / This is my blood” have become so familiar that they have lost their power to shock, amaze, or surprise.  Jesus’ first hearers were confused and confounded, but he doubled down saying:

“Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.”

What does all this mean?  Find out this Sunday, as Mark Crawford preaches for us.

The readings for this Sunday will be from 1 Kings 2:10-12, 3:3-14, Ephesians 5:15-20, and John 6:51-58, and we will be singing the hymns Immortal, invisible, God only wise; When we walk with the Lord; I am the Bread of Life; and Tell Out My Soul!

More Bread!

From Father Iain, All Saints Chiang Mai

Give us this day our daily bread!

(My church email is not working!  Please use iainbaxter.mail@gmail.com to contact me!)

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Gospel passage, Jesus reveals himself as the Bread of Life!  We need to eat from Jesus to live.

Breaking bread together was a key part of the life of the early church, and as well as sharing Communion this Sunday we will share our food with each other in this week’s potluck at the vicarage.  Please bring food to share so that we have plenty.

Some of the children from the Youth Charity Foundation will also be joining us, and this gives us a chance to share with those less fortunate than us.  We must remember and count our blessings.

The readings for this Sunday will be from 1 Kings 19.4–8, Ephesians 4:25-5:2, and John 6:35, 41-51, and we will be singing the hymns Praise my Soul the King of Heaven; My Jesus, My Saviour; Let us Break Bread Together; and Christ, Be Our Light.  The choir will be singing Still!
